The mic is removable. The audio jack is 3.5mm. For Xbox one controllers without the 3.5mm audio jack you'll need the headset adapter.

I'm buying them for my 11 year old are they the right size for him
Size yes as they have an adjustable headset. Compatible with PC/Xbox One/PS4/Android/iOS. If buying for Xbox One make sure your controller has the 3.5mm Jack, if not you'll need the headset adapter.

Does the keyboard have a backlight to use in the dark?
I don't know why it is never given in the specs, but it would be very nice to know which keyboards have a backlight so they can be used in low light conditions. Does this one?
Unfortunately it does not have a backlit keyboard.
