THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL recounts the adventures of GUSTAVE H., a legendary concierge at a famous European hotel between the wars; and ZERO MOUSTAFA, the lobby boy who becomes his most trusted friend. The story involves the theft and recovery of a priceless Renaissance painting; a raging battle for an enormous family fortune; a desperate chase on motorcycles, trains, sleds, and skis - all against the backdrop of a suddenly and dramatically changing continent.

Wes Anderson has done it again. Yet another brilliant film from possibly Thee best indie director out there. Quirky to say the least. Grand Budapest Hotel's sense of humor, coupled with it's precise staging, shot composition and incredible acting make this a pleasure to watch. A brilliant score compliments the film, but for once does not include in 1960s British Invasion tunes. While I do love the old Kinks stuff, this film does fine without it. Can't wait to watch it again...and again.

The thing about the Avett Brothers is that each album seems to uncover another layer of influence in their sound. Folk, Country, Rock, Sugary Pop, Easy listening, singer-Songwriter,... In some cases this results in an uneven listening experience. This album is fairly cohesive in a sad sack kind of way. Stand-out tracks for me are "Open Ended Life" , "Another is Waiting" and "Souls Like The Wheels".. The first is solid southern rock road song that eloves into a small barn dance. The 2nd is radio friendly pop charmer; but the 3rd one ("Souls Like the Wheels") is worth the cost of admission all on its own. Just a simple amazing solo effort from Seth Avett recorded at a concert in which he invokes acoustic Neil Young & 60's era Paul Simon. Just a beautiful little rumination on letting go of the past and reaching for a better future.
All in all this is a solid album. A little bit of a drag at times as the tempo slows and the songs sometimes get a little sappy. But upon repeated listening this album just get more and more staying power. Definitely worth a listen.

I came upon this band and this album late. Had written them off as hype. But upon finally sitting down and listening to Emotionalsim I was quite simple floored. Such a distinct sound amonst all the white noise in current pop. The songs are all beautifully written performed with a rough charm that is the spirit of folk. The use of Banjo, Guitar, Stand-up bass and cello creates a rich, vintage sound that embraces lovers of both folk, country and rock. Enough can't be said about the vocals and the way they weave through each other adding a wealth of emotional resonance. The album appears to be recorded live in the studio, which leads to occasional rough patches, but ultimately these moments just add to the realness & beauty of the music. If you plan to get just one Avett Brothers album, this is the one.
