I used Mohu map and station calculator to determine how many channels I would pick up, 36. However the best I for was 28 and maybe only half of that would come through reliably. Did not meet my expectations.

Is it necessary to buy a hub or can these be controlled by the app without one? What is the benefit of buying the hub?
Without a bridge (hub), it will use Bluetooth connection (33ft max distance) and only have ability to control up to 10 lights. And you can't group the lights into zones, and it has basic routines.
With the bridge, it will use Zigby protocol (instead of Bluetooth) and can control up to 50 lights reaching greater than 33ft, so you don't have to be in the same room) and can also allow control from outside the home by enabling remote access.

Can these be used for inclosed light fixtures outdoors?
Yes. I have 4 of these bulbs outdoors enclosed next to garage and front door.
