After an American sub ventures into Russian waters responding to a ship in distress-and winds up on the ocean floor itself-Commander Joe Glass (Gerard Butler) draws the dicey duty of leading the investigative voyage. Dealing with literal treacherous waters as well as diplomatic tides, he discovers that the naval disasters may be part and parcel of an audacious power grab at the Kremlin. Throwback thriller also stars Gary Oldman, Common, Linda Cardellini, Toby Stephens, Michael Nyqvist. 122 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.

It wasn't so bad that I wanted to turn it off, but there was a whole LOT to make fun of throughout the movie. One thing that was funny was in the extras where they talked about wanting to make it as "real" as possible, trying to get all the painstaking details correct, but then they did things like, maneuvering the sub through a mine-filled canyon missing the walls and mines by mere inches, scraping the ocean floor TWICE, the ever-predictable water pipes bursting everywhere as they approach hull-crush depth. They tried to get some of the "Crimson Tide" vibe between the Caption and the Executive Officer by having the XO loudly contradict the Captain throughout their ENTIRE mission. I'm sorry but that is not getting the details about the navy correct. That XO would have been confined to quarters or placed under arrest for his constant mouthing off. That is only a couple brief examples of how unrealistic it was, to say nothing of the basic plot which is a mission to kidnap the Russian President during a coup, just to keep him safe. All that aside, I was entertained. Just don't go in thinking this is going to be one of the "great" submarine movies, because it's just not.
From executive producer Tom Hanks, the HBO miniseries Band of Brothers tells the story of a collection of soldiers from the 506th Regiment of the 101st Airborne Division of the United States Armed Forces, also known as "Easy Company", during World War II. The ten-episode story spans from 1942 during the group's training to the conclusion of fighting in Europe, and focuses on the experiences and tribulations of the individuals fighting for the Stars and Stripes in addition to important events such as D-Day and the liberation of Holocaust survivors. The series features stars including Damian Lewis (Homeland), Ron Livingston (Office Space), Donnie Wahlberg and Michael Fassbender.

If you ever wondered what our fathers/grandfathers had to go through in fighting Germany during the 2nd world war, this should answer much of it. Produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks, the series follows the Paratroopers of Easy Company from training, through D-day, and all the way into Germany. Based on the real stories of the men who lived through it, and even featuring interviews with them. These men were heroes in the truest sense of the word, and what they did will stay with you forever.

A real Agatha Christie style whodunnit. Every character has a motive, and just when you think you have it all figured out, you don't. Wonderful ensemble cast where each actor has moments to shine. While not played as a comedy the way that "Clue" was, it is still quite funny. It is clear that the actors had a lot of fun making it.

He's a mama's boy and a dreamer, but he'll come out on top, it's Danny Kaye after all. With all his signature awkwardness and comedic timing, this is just plain fun to watch.
GLADIATOR - Blu-ray - Ridley Scott (BLADE RUNNER, ALIEN) transports Hollywood to second-century Rome in this rousing historical epic that proudly harkens back to such films as BEN-HUR and SPARTACUS. Russell Crowe plays Maximus, a Roman general who leads the troops in conquering Germania for the empire. When an aging Marcus Aurelius (Richard Harris) tells Maximus that he'd like him to rule Rome once he's gone, a classic confrontation ensues between the brave and charming soldier-who wants to return home to his wife, son, and farm-and the jealous and conniving Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor's only son, who is thirsty for power. Bought as a slave by the profiteering Proximo (Oliver Reed, in his last role), Maximus must kill or be killed in the ring, battling to save not only himself but the future of the very empire that he loves and honors. The film features a terrific battle sequence (that recalls the beginning of SAVING PRIVATE RYAN), huge crowd scenes of thousands of people, and even a little romance, albeit mostly taboo. The impeccably choreographed gladiator scenes are violent yet thrilling, flashing by like lightning. GLADIATOR is a glorious spectacle filled with heart and soul. Color/154 min/R/widescreen.

Like the best of old school Hollywood epics, Gladiator pulls out all the stops to deliver spectacle, intrigue, and the all the trappings of ancient Rome. Yes, it's about fighting for your life, and fighting for justice, and even revenge, but it's about a man just trying to go home. Beautifully shot, with actors at the top of their game.

With no explanations of why, the world has suddenly lost any memory of the Beatles except our protagonist. As he plays, the world discovers it for the first time. There are pitfalls along the way, as he has troubles with love, his exploding musical career, and the guilt over not actually writing any of it himself weighing on his mind. The movie is a delight, thoroughly entertaining, and features the some of the greatest songs of the 20th century.

I know that playing cds is becoming old fashioned in today's streaming environment, but I have a lot of really wonderful music on cd that still plays just fine. It's funny to me that LP records and turntables are making a comeback but trying to find what I consider to be standard "stereo" equipment is fading away. Brand new sound system cd players (not boomboxes) aren't as plentiful as they once were, so I was delighted to find this player both affordable and easy to use.

The thing about Pixar that makes them such a powerhouse studio, is not the amazing graphics of their computer animated work, it is the detailed and heartfelt storytelling at the center of each film. Coco is about being true to yourself, finding your place in the world, holding on to your dreams, and the importance of family. It is warm, sentimental, insightful, hilarious, adventurous, and everything we've come to expect from a Pixar film. If you haven't seen it yet, take an hour and half and give yourself a treat. Whether you have kids or not, if you have a heart, you WILL enjoy this film.
