When our dryer died under the extended warranty, we bought a new washer to match the new dryer we had to purchase. We canceled our washer's warranty and received a small refund back against what we had paid. Adding the washer and dryer warranties together, we still came out way ahead.

Buying extended warranties used to be a tough decision for us. As consumer grade appliances seem to be engineered for shorter lives, it seem more likely we will experience a failure in the lifespan of the warranty. Our old dryer was serviced under an extended warranty and due to a parts shortage triggered a replacement where we got the full value of the previous device purchased (not including the extended warranty price). Glad we had it!
