I had a large traditional antenna that had difficulties picking up more than a few channels clearly in my area. Before giving up, I spoke with someone knowledgeable at Best Buy. He recommended this antenna. He was right. I went from three channels to 27! What a difference. It wasn’t that my old antenna wasn’t good, because I gave it to a family member that uses it in their area to get over 30 channels clearly. And it really is omnidirectional. After attaching and aiming it (with Antenna Point app), I had to turn it 90 degrees to remove the old antenna. After forgetting to reset it, I still got all but one channel clearly. Amazing!

I have an Apple TV box and a Chromecast box in a drawer somewhere. Apple is too limited and Chromecast is too irritating to try to use. Roku never had those issues. They offer apps for more than all other boxes combined, and many apps that are totally free (movies, tv, etc.). You would have a hard time exhausting all the free channels before you would ever had to purchase any subscriptions if you chose. I already had Amazon Prime. I bought into that for the two day shipping and generally cheaper prices. Didn’t bother with movies and videos for a while, and now find we use it more than half the time. Prime video app works great. We also have a Tablo DVR (for our 20+ antenna channels). Tablo app works great. With Roku, we “cut the cord” with cable tv. For a fraction of that cost I added a streaming service, philo. Philo offers two packages: 44 Chanel’s for $15.99 or 57 channels for $19.99, along with a good guide and free unlimited cloud dvr. And these are almost all the “good” channels you would chose, not mostly fillers! Roku gives us the ability to collect all these programs in one place and send them to our tv. We no longer have to change inputs on tv and keep up with different remotes. Add a Roku to each tv and you are set. Yes you do need Internet service and a home router. Your TVs don’t have to be “smart TVs.” They just need to have an hdmi input. Any Roku will work. We chose the ultra units because they offer total control they will eliminate the need to also use the tv remote. The ultra will turn your tv on and off and control the volume as well. They also come with ear buds that can be plugged into the Roku remote. It will automatically turn off tv sound and you can listen without disturbing others. Best of the best! Totally independent review!

Best OTA DVR for budget minded

Pros: This is a great product for a very reasonable price. You will have to add a portable hard drive. 1 tb is more than sufficient unless you never want to have to delete watched programs. That adds another $50-$59. Advantage is that you can exchange, add, or replace hard drive without having to replace main box. I had Tablo in the early days when guide and software wasn’t quite as good and enjoyed it then. Much improved now and enjoying it much more. First time around, I purchased a lifetime subscription to their extended guide. Unlike Tivo, the subscription registers to the user, and not just to the device. With Tivo, if your DVR dies, you not only get to buy a new DVR, but also a new “lifetime subscription” to their guide service. Also, with Tablo, you can use a limited guide without having to purchase the extended one. After years of trying other routes, I’m back to Tablo and very pleased. Also their internal tv tuner is much stronger than Tivo’s. I had a Tivo for years that I used with cable, which had the ability to work with antenna (although you could only use one or the other, not both). After “cutting the cord,” I tried using it for OTA (over the air-antenna) and found that it would only pick up two stations using a very good antenna (the same one I used with older Tablo). Since Tivo had recently came out with an OTA “only” box, I hoped the tv tuner might be more powerful. I purchased it and still only got the same two channels. Yes, I did use “Antenna Point” and other instruments to get best signal. With same antenna mounted and pointed the same, the Tablo tuner picked up almost thirty channels clearly.im sure the Tivo would work well in a large city with powerful antennas, but doesn’t in my smaller market. And I also purchased the newest, high end antenna, which gave the same results.
Cons: Tablo’s guide is good (similar to cable guide), and sufficient for my needs. However the one area that Tivo excels is in their guide. I have to admit they are miles ahead of any other TV guide and user controls, bar none (OTA dvr, cable, satellite, etc.). I had convinced myself to pay their higher dvr and subscription price to keep their guide, but saw that was not possible with their weak tv tuner. I’m still scratching my head as to why they would now sell an OTA only box with a pitifully weak tuner???
Even trailing slightly in the guide (only), Tablo is the clear winner as best value and best product. And by the way, this review is completely independent and unsolicited. I have not (nor will not) received anything from Tablo.

Sling is a service going in the right direction. No local channels, but most could get them with an antenna. There is just not enough “good” channels without combining the two offerings. Combined, $40 is just too much for what you get. My recommendation is if this satisfies your need with one of the smaller packages.

And if you have cable, you don’t have to rent their DVR boxes, so really, it’s not more expensive. And if you buy the antenna only box, the service is half the price.

Does this work with recording shows on the Spectrum TV App?
No. This is for recording over the air programs received by antenna only. If you have (or are considering) a tv antenna, and you get reasonable tv signal, this product offers a great way to record any shows/ sports available. You can even watch them from remote locations. You would need a Roku or similar tv box as well. @ great way to become a “cord cutter.”

Does it included lifetime subscriptions
No, but if you have cable you can rent a cable card from cable company for about $2 a month. I pay yearly subscription of $150. Your cable provider may advertise “free had” but that does not include the rental of an hd box with dvr. This is not only cheaper, but if you ever use TiVo, you’ll be hooked for life. The guide and flexibility surpasses everything else.
