High capacity storage in a tiny package

It will easily fit into even the smallest pocket of a laptop sleeve (or bag). I reformatted the drive from the exFAT it comes with to NTFS, and then performed some speed tests. I connected it to a fast USB-C port on my computer and obtained a speed of ~1000MB/s, consistent with what most others have found. This is fine for my needs. I use this drive to make backups of my laptop. I highly recommend this drive!

My new ASUS Strix G16 16 inch laptop is thick and has a large 280 Watt power brick. This backpack can easily handle both, and has plenty of space to spare! My laptop fits comfortably in the main storage area. There is even space to insert a little extra padding on the bottom and sides when making longer trips. There are three nested pockets on the front. My large 280 Watt power brick fit easily in the smallest pocket. I put its power cord in the second largest pocket, with plenty of room for my gaming mouse and my gaming pad. The largest pocket I use for papers, and a little extra padding. This briefcase is an excellent fit for my new ASUS Strix 16" gaming laptop. This laptop is considerably thicker than an ordinary 16" laptop, yet it fits comfortably into one of the main pockets of this case. It is also afforded good padding by the case. When closed up with the laptop inside, the case is a good thickness, again illustrating its padding. There is a large exterior pocket that can easily hold a mouse, a large wattage usb c charger, and an external ssd drive. The handles of the case are sturdy and comfortable to hold. I’ve been really happy with the HP OmniDesk so far. The Intel Core Ultra 7 processor is super fast, and with 16GB of DDR5 memory, everything runs smoothly — even when I have a bunch of apps and tabs open. The 1TB SSD gives me plenty of space and makes startup and loading times really quick.
The Dark Wood design looks awesome in person — it actually feels like part of my furniture instead of a bulky computer tower. It’s quiet, doesn’t overheat, and handles all my daily tasks easily.
If you’re mostly using your desktop for work, streaming, school, or light creative projects, this is a great pick. It’s not built for serious gaming, but for everything else, it’s fast, reliable, and looks great on your desk.

I think I might have to get a new desk; this case looks too good to be sitting underneath. Seriously, this may be the nicest looking case I’ve ever purchased. But more importantly, it’s a fast, quiet and powerful replacement for my current desktop.
If you’re like me, you may have a PC that, even though it’s powerful enough and capable, somehow can’t be upgraded to Windows 11. For my current PC, that’s a Dell Inspiron that I bought from BB 7 years ago. And while it’s maxed out on memory, has plenty of disk space available and even supports TPM. Microsoft decided the 4.3 Ghz AMD CPU doesn’t cut it. Go figure…
I’ve been looking for a desktop upgrade lately and got an opportunity to check out the HP OmniDesk. The specs certainly checked out, but the look was what sealed the deal. It even looks better in person. Unboxing it I was surprised how light it was, but a large part of that is the lack of any mechanical hard drives. In fact, this is the first PC I’ve ever bought that has no internal HDD mounts. Which isn’t really a problem, given the 1 TB SSD should be plenty for most people and can be expanded to 2 TB. It also has a plethora of USB ports both front and back if you want to expand via external drives.
But by looking at the motherboard, I found a secret. There are SATA ports on the motherboard! Unfortunately, I was unable to test them in time for this review as the power connector requires an adapter I had to order and was delayed coming in from China. If you want to test them yourself, you’ll need a four-pin female floppy power connector (sometimes referred to as a “Berg” connector) to a SATA female connector. While I couldn’t test it, PC inventory apps like Belarc Advisor DO show the SATA subsystem, so there’s a good chance it is active.
The system comes with 16gb of DDR5 memory, which is more than adequate for the average Win 11 user, but I upgrade mine to 32gb as I often have a few windows open and appreciate the extra breathing room. You could upgrade it to 32gb max; I considered this, but I really don’t do much memory intensive work these days, so it seemed overkill.
I was a little surprised at the performance compared to my Dell; even though the CPU is running at a slightly slower speed than the Dell, the performance feels snappier and more responsive. And the PC overall is much quieter. My Dell Inspiron wasn’t a loud unit most of the time, but occasionally the fan would surge when opening an app or a couple of browser windows. Not so with the OmniDesk, for the first couple of days I had to check to make sure it wasn’t hibernated!
As much as I resisted Windows 11, I must admit that I am happy I migrated. Moving over was straightforward and if you have an MS Account, you can even migrate settings and programs over easily. HP’s Windows setup went without event, and I was quickly up and running. Two days later and it’s in place as my main desktop and I feel like I’m good for another 7 years.
I would DEFINITELY recommend the HP OmniDesk as a worthy upgrade or first PC. It can handle anything from browsing and daily emails to a genuine home office workhorse. It would also fit in nicely into a small to medium-sized office environment. I’ve always been happy with my HP purchases and the OmniDesk is no exception. Backed by a great company, I know it will last me a long time.

It has a polarized two-prong plug, ie, one prong is larger than the other. It can be plugged in only one way. The outlet on the wall must permit the use of such a plug.

Would this mat be appropriate for setting my laptop on, on top of a mahogany desk? The features mention it holding a keyboard, mouse etc but I.d like to know if it would also be fine to set a laptop on it. Thank you!
I use it with my gaming laptop and gaming mouse. It works well. It would be fine on your mahogany desk.

Does the refurbished t7 work as good as a new t7?
I purchased two of these refurbished drives. After properly initializing and formatting one of them, it appears to work as well as a new drive. This was not true for the second drive - I struggled to get it to work, and then found that 7% of the sectors of the drive were bad. It now appears to be working, but I less confidence in it.

Does the external SSD come with a USB-C cable? I’m not sure if I have one.
It should come with two cables. One a usb c to c, and the second a usb c to a. Mine came in a little box "hidden" behind the drive. However, you need to test them with a drive known to be good. I found 3 of the 4 cables I received with two of these drives to be defective.

I just purchased this external ssd and tried to use it for the first time. It will not show up on my computer anywhere, except on the "eject" tray. Why can't my new laptop see or open it the file location?
I suspect that it needs to be initialized and then formatted - operations you can do from disk management. However, it could also be a bad cable. I had a similar experience with this refurbished drive.

Can I add storage?
Yes you can. However to do so requires cloning the existing drive to one that is larger, and then removing the existing drive and replacing it with the larger drive.

What operating system is installed ?
My version of this laptop came loaded with Windows 11 Home. I see that there is another version of this laptop that comes loaded with Windows 11 S, that imposes some restrictions making it more secure.

Is the 8GB RAM memory expandable?
Yes it is. The 8GB of RAM it come with is soldered in, but there is an empty SO-DIMM slot where you can add additional RAM.
