It will “chime” when in proximity to another iPhone, however, it is not really loud. This is how Apple is currently avoiding privacy concerns (eg tracking your cheating partner by slipping it into their jacket pocket). If you hide it good enough your thief may not be able to find it easily in the car, allowing you to track the item longer. Take note that nothing is sure-fire security and can be defeated one way or another. This is certainly an inexpensive way to track anything of value, but you are always dependent upon other people’s iPhones for this to work effectively.

Can I save music files ?
Yes, firmware version 7.14.0-130 should support storing AND playing music files stored on your ibi. However, it and its software is really intended to be used for photo and videos:

Can I play photos to a monitor from this device?
Not directly to a computer monitor, no. I would suggest referencing the ibi "Do More" area to see additional information available for using the SanDisk ibi apps written for AppleTV, Fire TV and Roku to play images directly to your television. Screenshot below is from the iOS app.

Has anyone used this to plug into a desktop computer to download a photo without using the application? I want to know if it can function like an external hard drive if needed without WiFi to take the photos out individually or per album, Etc.
According to the SanDisk Support site: no, you cannot connect an ibi for direct access to a PC or Mac. From my research, there seems to be no workaround, hack or jailbreak to allow this either -- you must rely solely on the SanDisk servers (using their desktop, web or mobile software) as an "intermediary" between a devices and the ibi. WiFi access is a must.

Can you back up things other than photos and videos on here?
Yes -- using the desktop ibi app, you can mount the ibi to your desktop and upload and download files just as you would to an internal or an attached drive. Those files are then accessible via the Mobile App as well (click the "hamburger menu" (three stacked lines) in the upper left corner, then click "Files & folders").

Does Ibi need to stay plugged in after I transfer photos?
No, but it does not have a battery, so its power plug (wall-wart type) must be plugged into the wall for the device to function (backing up, accessing files, etc). Note that there is NOT an on/off switch so if using the ibi app's "Shut down ibi" command, you must first unplug the ibi and then plug it back in order for it to boot back up.
