There is a lot of fun to be had with Lake Placid, this creature feature from the late 1990s. With whip-crack dialogue and a cast of notable character actors (Bill Pullman, Brendan Gleeson, Oliver Platt and others), Betty White is a stand out in her few scenes. To give life to the giant crocodile wreaking havoc on their small town community, there is an effective mixture of practical puppetry and CGI which has not lost its charm to the modern viewer.

Its themes and messages still speak to us almost 25 years later and deserves its reputation among the science fiction classics of the 90s such as The Matrix, Dark City, The Thirteenth Floor and others.

MCU's best film to date

I probably don't need to summarize this film since it made a billion dollars, but the film carries a very important message that is personally told and generally felt, and will resonate for many years to come. Blade (1998) is a comic book action adventure film from before the days of the MCU juggernaut. The titular Blade (played by Wesley Snipes) is a half-vampire, half-human hybrid feared by vampires as the "Day Walker". Although the movie shows its age somewhat with some unimpressive CGI, it's a fun film overall that is carried by strong lead performance from Wesley Snipes and a supporting performance from N'Bushe Wright as Blade's love interest. This is very much an R-rated superhero film, so expect a lot of violence directed at vampires and a darker tone than modern superhero films.

Pitch Black is a highly engaging and visceral sci-fi action flick from 2000. The movie is well written with intelligent characters, although Vin Diesel as Riddick steals the show. This edition from Arrow Films contains only a 4K UHD disc and but no Blu-ray or digital options. There is a small booklet included as well but that will only come in first pressings.

Event Horizon is a cult-classic sci-fi horror film hybrid from 1997, starring Sam Neill and Laurence Fishburne. While not as good as Alien, it has the same pretensions of that earlier film with its stark interiors and crew of relatable, working people thrust into a situation beyond their understanding. There are many moments of terror that are still powerful even if some of the CG effects are a bit dated today.
This Shout Factory release comes with a slipcover and tons of bonus features so it's a must for any fan of the movie.

Birds of Prey is a fun movie that showcases the talents of Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn within the DC film universe. This is more of a street level film where our anti-heroes are in peril but the universe does not need saving. Ewan McGregor as Black Mask is one of the nastier villains we've seen in a comic book movie to date.
Quick note on the release: the image on the website and the listing mention the inclusion of a digital code but the actual packaging from my purchase does not mention the digital code anywhere. I was worried it would be missing but when I opened the case, there was a digital code included. So if you're worried it might not be included, it should be there even if the packaging doesn't mention it.

Dredd, based on the comic book series published by 2000 AD, is a stellar comic book adaptation that stands out from the standard fare.
Karl Urban stars as the titular Judge Dredd, an arbiter of justice in the apocalyptic world of Mega City One. Dredd takes place over the course of a single day, in which the judge is paired with greenhorn Anderson (Olivia Thirlby), a recruit with a unique psychic ability. They find themselves locked within the confines of a skyscraper controlled by Ma-Ma, a ruthless crime boss played by Lena Headey. The rest of the movie plays out as Dredd and Anderson have to fight for their survival in Ma-Ma's territory, contending with both gangsters and corrupt Judges. The movie wastes no time in throwing the viewer headlong into this dangerous and gritty world, carried by Karl Urban's impressive performance and a riveting electronic soundtrack.
The steelbook edition features great art and is recommended to long-time fans of the movie and newcomers as well.
