I asked the store rep if this would fit a Canon M50 without lens and he said it certainly would - he was certainly wrong. I've found another use for this or I would have returned it.
It fits my GoPro just fine with a few small accessories/adapters, so I'm keeping it.

Need plenty of batteries for the mirrorless camera

I would recommend at least one, possibly two, spare batteries if you have a mirrorless camera - I do and this was purchased for my M50. I can get 250-300 shots out of one charge but it's nice to have a spare ready to go when the first dies. I'm not sure about using off-brand batteries so I stuck with Canon even though I didn't care for the price.

Great foray into mirrorless

If you're a canon shooter and you're not sure about mirrorless this is an excellent choice to get your feet wet. It's also a good choice for beginners (which I am). The native lens selection is a bit limited, but with a $200 adapter you can mount any EF/EF-S. I had my friend's 70-300 on this with the adapter, it looks hilarious but I got the shots I was looking for.

Do you need to buy a lens to take pictures on a camera? Or can I just get the camera because this was one of the suggested things to buy but I’m not sure
That would depend on the type of camera you purchase, this lens for instance has an M style mount and would fit any M body. There are cameras, commonly called point and shoot, that come with an attached, unchangeable, lens.
