Abrams Reboot is Great

I was skeptical of the idea of rebooting the original series with a new crop of actors but JJ Abrams did a great job of crafting an origin story that brought James T. Kirk to meet Spock, Bones, Uhura, Chekov, Sulu and Scotty and take command of the starship Enterprise. A renegade Romulan named Nero is hell bent on revenge for the destruction of his planet during a future point in history which has the Enterprise characters finding their place while under Starfleet training and thus being pushed into duty to save the Earth from being dissolved into a black hole. A very entertaining and well thought out film with fan servicing to the original tv series.

I don't feel any of the Mission Impossible films are less than excellent. Each film has its own story at stake but they evolve and build upon each other further into the series. The stunts are well done and while seemingly over the top at times at least there's some feeling of plausibility, unlike the Fast and Furious franchise. Tom Cruise is great as always and all the recurring and one off characters brought by a variety of actors are well done. Excellent entertainment.

The Film that Launced the Marvel Universe

Iron Man was a bit of a 2nd tier character in the comics but a perfect film for Marvel to introduce their characters to the big screen. Robert Downey Jr. was a risky but in hindsight glorious choice to portray Tony Stark, aka Iron Man, the arrogant and super wealthy weapons maker and tech genius who throughout his arc as the character learns to become a hero and inspiration for all.

The Rocky collection is the history of Rocky Balboa, the fictional character created by Sylvester Stallone. The original film, loosely based on the story of Chuck Wepner won the Academy Award for Best Picture, the follow up films an extension of how Stallone wanted the character to evolve. Rocky 2 is similar in tone to the first film, slower paced and more dramatic. Rocky 3 and 4 went towards a more 80's style action direction with less drama and some over the top cheesiness but are great entertainment. Rocky 5 and 6 tries to blend a bit more grit and drama to the action and while 5 is probably the weakest of all the films, 6 ended the story of Rocky Balboa in a bittersweet way.

Murder on the Orient Express is well adapted film based the classic Agatha Cristie story with a excellent cast assembled for the various characters all stuck on a train when a murder takes place. Kenneth Branagh directs and stars as detective Hercules Poirot who pieces together the elements of the crime to determine the perpetrator. The 4k Blu-ray looks and sounds great and with luck more of the adventures of Poirot from other Christie novels will find their way to modern film adaptions.

This film is a must see. The story of a one time prodigy whose baseball career was sidetracked by naivety only to get another chance later in life is a compelling story about honesty, determination and redemption. Robert Redford turn as Roy Hobbs is remarkable and the film is loaded with a great cast including Robert Duvall, Kim Basinger, Wilford Brimley, Barbara Hershey, Glenn Close and others. While the film itself is 35 years the 4k Blu-ray release is sharp in detail and the excellent photography used filming this movie really stands out. A++
