The Suck Zone

This movie should be taken as seriously as I would ‘Point Break’ (the original with Reeves and Swayze). Now deceased Philip Seymour Hoffman is a part of the cast (storm chaser). He can be hilarious in an old SNL type of way (e.g. “van down by the river”). Bill Paxton is a main character (next to Helen Hunt). If you’re familiar with his roles, then you know it’s not uncommon to see him get worked up (like Nick Cage). The Blu-ray is overall good quality. Picture and sound is good. Effects are slightly dated, but that’s the nineties. It was great entertainment upon release and holds up today.

“Always Play With Their Minds”

In the beginning of the movie, A.J. and Mark (characters) are walking passed front of store and you can even make out Super Nintendo consoles and merchandise in the display window. Good film for 90’s nostalgia. Along the lines of John Hughs in ‘Breakfast Club’ during the ‘80s (seriousness with humor). Blu-ray is satisfactory. Nothing overly impressive in terms of high-definition, but at least it’s in the HD format.

Intense characters (good drama)

I really enjoyed this fictional story depicting tension between an aspiring jazz drummer student and his demanding/unorthodox music school instructor set in NY. This HD disc is a good value. (I have since purchased a copy in 4K/UHD, but I could have settled with the Blu-ray.) This steelbook arrived in the mail with a dent on the case, but my disc wasn’t at all damaged. At $5.99, I didn’t want to return. That is a risk. An in-store pickup might address the concern of purchasing online.

Still reference quality

‘1917’ maintains an illusion of continuous filming of single point-of-view with almost no breaks. (Director Sam Mendes applied this style also to opening of the Bond film ‘Spectre’.) It was publicly successful in that suspense wasn’t hindered. (In fact, special effects seemed more personal.) Though I personally prefer other war films over this one (such as ‘Saving Private Ryan’), I thought the church building scene at night time was an incredible scene. A/V great on 4K!

An “Odyssey” type story set in the South. Humorous situations and dialogue. Terrific soundtrack. Specs on the A/V for the Blu-ray exceeded my expectations.

Mill Creek (not a Sony release)
on June 11, 2021
Posted by: DL1234
Verified Purchase:Yes
‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ may have come after Wes Craven’s ‘Scream’, but personally, I enjoy it just as much (and maybe a bit more). (Both screenplays were written by Kevin Williamson.).
Frankly, I have a standalone copy by Mill Creek because, at the time of my purchase, the item on BestBuy was listed (incorrectly) as being released by Sony. My personal feedback is that this Blu-Ray release (no extras or special features) is a modest upgrade from DVD. Picture quality is somewhat sharper and colorful with contrast/blackness balance (an important factor while watching) being the most satisfactory. Case artwork (reminiscent of 1997) is also accurate and certainly a positive.
However, if artwork isn’t important, Mill Creek also puts out double- and triple-feature releases. At least one of which (I can attest) surprisingly contains BETTER AUDIO of ‘I Know’ (without picture compromise). (This particular standalone offers only 2-channel surround.) For this reason alone, one might consider looking at the triple-feature by Mill Creek which is called “Queens of Scream” before making a purchase. It contains ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ in 5.1 channel surround along with ‘When A Stranger Calls’ (2006 remake) and ‘Vacancy’ (2007). Right now, it’s just under $8.99 on BestBuy!!
One step up from that in quality is Sony 2008’s copy. Picture is well-saturated. Audio is in Dolby TrueHD 5.1. Usually, it must be purchased at $25+ pre-owned, third party or both. Unless you are either already a die-hard fan or home theater tech/specs person, “Queens of Scream” is the best viewing value though.

Two-disc set includes Braveheart (1995) Director/star Mel Gibson took home Best Picture and Best Director Academy Awards for this historical epic about 13th-century Scottish hero William Wallace, a farmer of lesser nobility, who is forced into fighting the forces of England's King Edward I after they kill his father and new wife. C/Rtg R Gladiator (2000) Winner of Best Picture and Best Actor Academy Awards, director Ridley Scott's stirring spectacle stars Russell Crowe as heroic Roman general Maximus. HDR going to battle
on June 11, 2021
Posted by: DL1234
Verified Purchase:Yes
Audio (Atmos and DTS:X) are upgrades, but in my opinion, it doesn’t have to be only (or even the main) reason to “double-dip” here... I also appreciate the visuals of 4K (UHD Blu-ray) over the 2K (Blu-ray) overall. HDR coloring (moreso than the aspect of sharpness) can make a difference for both of these movies.
I found that the opening scenes of ‘Gladiator’ have way better contrast and detail. (Fire is well highlighted, and any beams sunlight leading through the tall trees have clarity above SDR. Even the tent scenes after the battle with the barbarians appear more natural.) In ‘Braveheart’, the earlier scene where young William seeing Scottish countrymen hanging inside the hut was about night and day difference (almost literally). (The Blu-ray is brighter and looks as if the time of day is late afternoon.)
I had been holding off on this purchase, but now, I am satisfied after pulling the trigger.
Note; Discs (plural) also came with digital codes.

Set up a seamless home entertainment system with this Samsung wireless rear speaker kit. Easy to incorporate with your soundbar, the units mount to your wall and connect wirelessly to eliminate unsightly tangles of wire. Low standby power consumption and a slim design make this Samsung wireless rear speaker kit an ideal solution for smaller spaces.

Joined to Samsung soundbar w/ Panasonic 4K player

This is one purchase in which I was skeptical about some negative reviews...
I had purchased these rear speakers open-box ‘excellent’, and they really enhanced my home theater experience. Once setting up correctly (emphasis here), these speakers provided just the right ambient sound by the couch that I was wanting with my Samsung HW-Q60T 5.1 channel soundbar and subwoofer (sold separately also).
They work with both lossless and lossy input signals. (Note: Atmos must be converted to Dolby TrueHD.) Though not designed for dialogue or heavy bass, many background sounds (wind, distant cars, vehicles, people, sirens, explosion effects, musical score, etc.) become pleasantly distinct.
Good decision. Thanks Samsung.

Roku Express HD Player

Picture looks great. Remote is slimmer or sleeker than the last model that I purchased sometime around 2012-13. Connectivity is good. Adhesive strips to put the player into place. I also own the 4K Steaming Stick+. There is a noticeable uptick in video quality there (obviously because of the 4K content). However, if HD is all you need, this is a perfectly adequate player to stream.

Looks great on 4K. There is grain present, but that is to be expected for an older film. The soundtrack is in Mono. Purists will appreciate this... This is a heart-warming and wholesome, classic piece of cinema.

Understand color timing concerns of other reviews. (I’m not sure I like 1989 Batman’s 4K disc - also from Warner - more than the older Blu-ray visually.) Though, I welcome the change for this film. (It seems more natural. E.g. cooler correction for overly warm.) The audio for the Blu-ray is 5-channel (but Dolby True HD and not DTS). On my sound system (with soundbar and its encoding), I do notice slight difference between the discs. Then, everyone has their own my setup.
