This movie is SOOOOOOO much better than it has any right to be and is a high point for Mike Flanagan who is always worthwhile. The director's cut is by far the better film with about 30 minutes of character development and extra color. It's probably my favorite movie of the last 5 years and I can't recommend it enough. Warner's released it at the wrong time with the wrong advertising and it's criminal. My only caveat is that this is also available on 4k UHD- but the preferred director's cut is only available on blu-ray for both sets. I promise if you like this movie you'll be all in on the director's cut. The UHD does offer a digital code for 4k UHD of the director's cut, but I find even on my 4k set-up, a quality 1080p disc still compares well to a 4k stream. So, ymmv, as to whether the 4k digital is worth the extra cost.

The movie is not a misunderstood classic, but it is a beautiful fever-dream that I continue to admire 28 years on... There are plenty of great supplements. The Edison Frankenstein is a welcome addition and it looks great with an appropriate score. I'm a silent film fan, so I loved this extra. The film handily best the blu-ray- which looked pretty good for what it was. The sound is the same 5.1 (with the addition of the original stereo) and you really can't go wrong with either, but the 5.1 remains fuller and more enveloping.

So much better than its compatriot, Dr. X. This strikes the exact right balance of humor, drama and horror and it looks better than I could ever have hoped. That said- it's a 3-strip technicolor from 1933 so it's gonna look soft. Adjust your expectations. What it lacks in fine detail, it more than makes up for in Fay Wray.

I know reviews rate this receiver pretty highly. My star average is due to buying it open-box in what was described as 'excellent' condition. It was missing a remote, so I returned it. Then, I decided I don't really have the space or spouse-approval (ha ha) for Atmos and opted for a 5.1 Sony with 4K HDR passthrough and couldn't be happier.

I can't objectively give this particular film 5 stars, but 3 stars doesn't mean I enjoy it any less than something I'd award 5 stars. Amicus is, at its best, about as good as 2nd-tier Hammer to me, but the atmosphere and wonderful character actors chewing up campy dialogue are kinda the point of how I get into their output. Even not very good pizza is still good pizza.
