The Tom Cruise vehicle Cocktail comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital Stereo. Supplementary materials are limited to the theatrical trailer. This is a sparse disc from Disney/Buena Vista, but it should be enough to satisfy fans of the film, who along with Tom Cruise fans represent this title's intended audience. There is little here to interest the average DVD consumer.

William Wyler's unique look at the American Civil War, Friendly Persuasion, comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Mono. Subtitles are accessible in both of those languages as well. Supplemental materials include production notes and a theatrical trailer. This is a good disc from Warner Bros. that is highlighted by the fine picture. A stereo mix would have been great, but this disc should entertain anyone with an interest in films from the '50s.

Paul Neaman returns to a role that made him famous in director Martin Scorsese's The Color of Money. Sadly, this 1.85:1 widescreen transfer is presented non-anamorphic, and as such suffers from a lack of true definition and crispness. While the colors are all fairly solid and bright, overall it's a disappointment to see an Oscar winning film given such shoddy treatment by Buena Vista. The soundtrack is presented in Dolby Digital 4.1 in English and French and plays above average. While the directional effects are kept to a minimum, this is still an apt mix that includes nary an once of hiss or distortion in the dialogue, music or effects. The extra features on this disc are floating at the bottom of the barrel -- all that's included are some paltry recommendation from the distributor.

Michael Mann's muscular adaptation of James Fenimore Cooper's classic novel The Last of the Mohicans comes to DVD with a widescreen anamorphic transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 2.35:1. Closed-captioned English soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, DTS 5.1, and Dolby Digital Surround, while a French soundtrack has been recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English and Spanish subtitles are accessible. Although there are no supplemental materials to speak of, the transfer does an exquisite job of presenting this visually breathtaking film.

I blew this movie off when it first came out, my mistake. Classic story, from a time when anything west of Albany NY was the frontier. Highly recommended

I missed the Blu Ray only part of the write up, but that’s my fault. Anything but Blu Ray won’t fit. I have Blu Ray’s, reworked my plans and this piece works great. Nice size, good price. I like it.

Hadn’t seen Von Ryans Express, it’s very good. Tora Tora Tora and 12 oclock High both good WWII air stories. Pearl Harbor and the air war in Europe. Blue Max is a great movie on the early days on warplanes and political/military maneuvering.
This 1997 Warner release came out pretty early on the DVD timeline, and while it comes in an anamorphic widescreen transfer that is a vast improvement over the old video release, the images come out grainy when compared to the original film print. Considering that Gordon Willis is easily one of the greatest cinematographers of all time, the transfer should be cleaned up in the future. Thankfully, the Dolby Digital 2.0 Stereo audio track is much cleaner and does not need any perceivable remastering. The DVD comes with a few extras, but they really are not very meaningful. Since Alan J. Pakula was killed in a horrible auto accident in 1998, there is, sadly, no chance for a director commentary track in the future. Star Robert Redford (who also co-produced the project) and screenwriter William Goldman are both good storytellers who could offer meaningful insights into the production on a future DVD re-release.
