It's the year 2029, and much of the world's mutant population has succumbed to a genocidal, man-made virus. As a down-and-out Logan (Hugh Jackman, in his final appearance as the character) comes to terms with his failing healing factor, he and an ailing Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) must protect Laura (Dafne Keen)-a young genetically bred mutant with powers similar to Logan's-from the evil organization that created her. Roland Emmerich's ho-hum remake of Godzilla comes to DVD with plenty of extra features: along with a widescreen transfer and Dolby Digital 5.1 Audio, the disc also includes a commentary by the special effects supervisor, shots of New York before and after the giant lizard destroys the town, cast filmographies, and the theatrical trailers. A "making of" featurette and photo gallery also highlight the film's admittedly impressive special effects, while the music video for the Wallflowers' cover of "Heroes" showcases the film's other selling point: its soundtrack. Though the film's artistic merits are dubious at best, Godzilla's DVD plays to its strengths, making it a disc special effects fans will appreciate.

Director James Cameron's deep-sea sci-fi epic recovers nearly half an hour of footage chopped from the original theatrical release with this director-approved re-edit. Starring Ed Harris, The Abyss follows a crew of scientists as they descend to unprecedented depths in the ocean. After pursuing a mysterious glowing light, they make an unbelievable discovery. Included on this DVD are both the new extended version and the original truncated cut, both in widescreen, offering viewers the chance to make their own conclusions about which is the superior film. The soundtrack comes in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound and subtitles are provided in English and Spanish. Along with the feature presentation, the disc includes a DVD-ROM script and storyboard-to-screen comparison. A double-disc Special Edition is also available as is a full-screen version of this single-disc package.
