The Rise of Skywalker's 2160p/HDR UHD immediately fixes the most glaring Blu-ray weakness, light blacks behind the opening crawl and across the first shot. The familiar yellow text is a bit more subdued here but very effective in pop and over the inky star field. Black level improvements are also noted in chapter 13 when Kylo Ren, clad in black, telepathically communicates with Rey while standing in a bright white room. Both his costume and the star field through the porthole are much more deeply pronounced on the UHD, and it's also perhaps the best example of white balance betterment in the entire movie; this is a more pure, intense white compared to a flat, creamy color on the Blu-ray. The picture is by-and-large perfect. Color saturation and tonal extension are terrific, from densely colored natural green during Rey's training early in the film to the bleak grays that dominate much of the film's third act. 3PO's golden body is a more sublime, thoroughly saturated color. Lightsabers dazzle with newfound intensity over the Blu-ray and high yield luminance that allows the beams to leap off the screen as the most dominant tonal force in the movie, followed closely by hyperspace light and Palpatine's lightning. The image is not as bright as the Blu-ray, but it's more accurate with improved overall depth and nuance. It's very pleasing beginning to end.
Textural improvements are surprisingly not as dramatic. While grain is more natural and more flattering (though it's unproblematic on the Blu-ray) and overall image clarity and sharpness are improved, there's not a night-and-day difference here. The picture enjoys more thorough filmic stabilization accuracy as well as generally crisper and accurate details, but the improvements are more fine than they are far-reaching. Viewers will note improved clarity and steadiness to wear and tear on robots and Resistance fighters, more intimately revealing skin and hair elements on humans, and sharper environmental elements, ranging from sandy deserts to dense jungles, from the weathered Falcon interior to slick and smooth First Order bridges and meeting rooms. Make no mistake, the UHD improves on the Blu-ray's resolution limitations, but even at native 4K the differences are not dramatic, albeit vital in the big picture. Source and encode flaws are entirely absent when viewing from normal distances. This is the best way to watch The Rise of Skywalker at home.

Black level excellence extends to the Rebel base first seen in chapter seven, and HDR brings the teal-colored maps (or whatever they are) to life with a previously unseen intensity and balance. It's otherwise a visually bland scene but on UHD it's suddenly a rich, vibrant experience while maligning structural integrity. The scenes and clash on Jedha are beautiful, with Stormtrooper costumes boasting white depth and clarity well beyond Blu-ray while also capturing wear and scruff in close-up with tactile definition. The UHD handles everything within the movie's visual spectrum with fantastic faithfulness and explodes in the final act with beautiful natural greens and blue waters on Scarif, supported by intensely popping explosions on the surface and bold laser blasts above during the large-scale space battle, which is one of the most exciting scenes in any Star Wars film. Clarity maintains excellence for the duration, revealing intimate character details, costume lines, and numerous world accents with breathtaking clarity. The blockade runner interiors seen in the final few minutes dazzle with the same white balance goodness seen in the Revenge of the Sith UHD. Even the closing blue credits pop. There appear to be no encode hiccups or source-related hangups of note. The existing Blu-ray looks great, but this takes Rogue One to a whole different level.

From a resolution perspective the native 4K source certainly finds great improvements over the Blu-ray as well. The increases to object sharpness and overall screen clarity are obvious. The picture finds greatly improved detailing to all of the elements that are vital within the visual parameters, including mud, wood and sandbag supports in the trenches, uniform patches and seams, and helmet wear-and-tear. Facial clarity is beyond superb even in more challenging low light scenes, whether inside dimly lit bunkers or under cover of night. Even fine point detail -- individual blades of grass, for instance, in those places where some grass still exists -- bear much visual fruit, as do countless examples of worn and decayed objects, like war-torn buildings or a collapsed bridge seen midway through the film. This is a dazzling UHD presentation from Universal.

The HDR color palette does bring a nice bit of tonal upgrade to the film, though it's more of a reinforcement rather than a recreation. Viewers will note fantastic white elements on Hoth, even seen from orbit for the first time as the probe droid enters the atmosphere. The snow is crisp, more brilliant and pure than ever before. The same can be said of Echo Base's snowy dugout interiors and, of course, storm trooper uniforms. Lightsabers enjoy amplified intensity in the final act when Vader and Luke square off in some lower-light areas within the city's bowels. Yoda's green skin and the murky Dagobaah sequences present with firmer depth while more naturally illuminated Cloud City locations spring to life with newfound vibrance. Black levels are superior here, whether outer space, shadowy corners, or Vader's costume. Skin tones appear nicely accurate as well. Overall, though, the UHD is a disappointment but at the same time the best the film has ever looked for home viewing.

The 2160p resolution ensures a firm, highly detailed image as well. Facial close-ups are excellent, easily the most complex and accurate in any of the three prequel films, besting even Attack of the Clones which looks good be never can quite kick into 4K hyperdrive. Here, there's intimacy and clarity aplenty, well beyond the Blu-ray's abilities. Droid close-ups are rewarding for grand texture and even digital Clone Troopers and other characters -- like Grievous and his lizard-like eyes seen in one close-up -- show fantastic attention to detail. There remains a certain air of artificiality to some of the visual effects shots, but this is a much more visually polished and fruitful experience than Attack of the Clones. Overall it's the best looking Star Wars UHD amongst the prequel trilogy and the original trilogy.

The HDR colors darken the image a bit, adding depth and some interesting changes, albeit not overly drastic, to the proceedings. The iconic opening crawl sports a deeper tone, definitely not what fans are used to seeing through the years from VHS to Blu-ray, from Laserdisc to DVD. It's almost a very light orange rather than the more traditional solid, bright yellow. Another one of the more immediately obvious color transformations comes on the circular board on Yavin 4 where the Rebels watch the Death Star's progress as it approaches firing range. The red color on the board finds significantly deeper push. C-3PO's golden exterior is much less gaudy here, presenting with a deeper, more subdued, but more polished, appearance. Stormtrooper whites and the blockade runner interiors find some of the most prominent improvements for color stabilization and white pop. Generally, colors enjoy improved saturation and contrast, be that skin, laser blasts, lightsabers, Tatooine terrain, or the slick gray and black surfaces around the Death Star's interior. Vader black is perfect and space exteriors and low light interiors enjoy boosted depth as well. By-and-large, HDR improves where necessary without fundamentally altering the movie, though a few of the above-referenced elements do stand out a bit.

Cars looks great on the UHD format, and most all of its excellence can be attributed to the HDR color spectrum. The HDR color spectrum is a boon for the image. Take a look at the film's title card, which is "Cars" painted onto a race track. The add to color depth is striking. Not only is the red far deeper and punchier but the surrounding gray pavement enjoys a significant boost to its scale, too. The cars look lovely under the bright racing lights. The sheen is spectacular, the colors pop with amazing authority, and various overlaid graphics seen during the TV broadcast segments dazzle. The first race is nothing short of a visual treat, with all of those luscious colors -- reds, greens, blues, yellows -- enjoying some serious brilliance that make the Blu-ray's SDR colors appear washed out and dull in comparison. The image dazzles along the way to Radiator Springs, such as when several cars with neon accents cause some mayhem that results in McQueen being jettisoned from his trailer, "Mack," and eventually winding up in the dusty has-been town of Radiator Springs. Building façades and the earthy terrain around town find a new gear for color depth and accuracy while the various new cars McQueen meets, including the rusted and worn Mater, are all HDR highlights for their own peculiarities and place on the color wheel. Whites dazzle and blacks are superbly deep. While the increase in resolution does little for the presentation, the HDR colors allow the movie to leap to another level. This is a very worthwhile upgrade, even if the majority of the upgrade falls into a single category.

Brad Pitt stars as Maj. Roy McBride, an astronaut whose father, the legendary H. Clifford McBride (Tommy Lee Jones), disappeared years earlier during a space journey to locate intelligent alien life. When it looks as though Clifford's mission may have created dangerous power surges that could destroy humanity, Roy embarks on a daring quest to find his father and save mankind. Set in the not-too-distant future, this exciting sci-fi actioner co-stars LIV Tyler, Ruth Negga, and Donald Sutherland. 123 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English. Two-disc set.

Excellent audio quality 4k movie

Ad Astra has a really nicely rendered Dolby Atmos track, a listening experience that takes the already excellent DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track on the 1080p Blu-ray and (literally) elevates it. From the opening hum and pulse effects that underlie some of the production mastheads, there's a clear vertical presence, something that really kind of bursts with considerable energy once Roy steps outside on the space antenna and the power surge occurs. There's consistent engagement of the Atmos channels in the many flight sequences, and this track duplicates the very powerful LFE that the DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 track offered in terms of some of the thrusters utilized during takeoffs and landings. Max Richter's score sounds great here as well, and all dialogue is rendered without any problems. We've gotten spoiled with a lot of really fine sound mixing in big sci-fi epics, but this Atmos track is another reminder of how much fun well mixed and designed audio can add to a movie going experience.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is, of course, an entirely digital production. It was reportedly finished at 2K, but that doesn't mean that there's not a wondrous image to be found. Indeed, the movie looks spectacular on the UHD format, managing to best a near-reference quality Blu-ray by a fairly significant margin. This is not simply a tweak around the edges but a serious improvement to both clarity and color. The former is certainly a little less dramatic than the latter, but the sheen and sharpness join together to enhance the intricate details around Berk and its human and dragon populace with fairly sizable increases in detail rendering and total image clarity. Dragon scales and bony protruding structures enjoy a much more firm, reliable, and texturally adept delivery. Small environmental details are just as impressive when seen up-close, like little bits of rock or moss or plant life seen around a huddle of brightly illuminated eggs at the 1:03:34 mark. The rise in clarity is fairly dramatic and surprisingly so for a digitally animated film.

Nice Quality Sound

The 4K UHD presentation of X-Men: Dark Phoenix offers a sonic upgrade from the already excellent DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1 mix featured on the 1080p Blu-ray with a really nicely rendered Dolby Atmos track. There is very nice vertical placement throughout the presentation, starting with some of the cacophony of the opening car crash clearly wafting overhead, and later effects, like jets and helicopters whizzing overhead clearly offering midair placement of effects. While there's the same "on again, off again" approach to immersion here that I mentioned in the X-Men: Dark Phoenix Blu-ray review, this Dolby Atmos rendering offers arguably more forceful LFE and an overall more consistent surround experience. Fidelity is excellent across the board, supporting both the over the top set pieces and the quieter dialogue moments with no problems whatsoever.
