Guilty pleasure

This movie jams; the music, seriously. I'm bobbing my head as I watch. And it's almost like the stuff happening around the killings, like the side stories of nobody characters, the super mean John Saxon cop character, and the biker gang "Goblins", keep things rolling.
At its heart, it's a desperate Italian-made, wannabe American slasher that's weak in many ways but entertaining in its quaint failures. If you've seen them all, I still way there's much worse out there, easy.

One of the scariest for its time

This is a story written only for TV and is without a doubt one of the creepiest movies. It is truly chilling, and not just because it is set in the dead of winter, but because of the horrifying events that occur during a winter storm in an isolated sea coast town. No, of course it's not realistic, but if you remember that you are watching fiction, you will enjoy being scared very nicely. We first saw this as a miniseries when it came out several years ago, and had to have the DVD. Stephen King did an excellent job, and the actors were well cast--the villain is especially scary. We have watched it more than once, and it delivers each time. Great winter creep out evening

Imperfect but riveting

You have to pay really close attention to understand what's going on. I agree with another reviewer who said you could take Jodie Foster out of the film without losing much. However, I suspect reviewers who dismiss this film as the "same old story" didn't really get it. Lots of good acting, and although the film sags for a bit in the middle, it's generally well paced, suspenseful, and funny in an oddball sort of way.

An outstanding depiction of how mad, mixed up and murderous a banal backwater can be. Stupendous performances from Macy and McDormand, including excellent accents (though those people really from North Dakota might object). And though the Coens lied in calling this a "true story," it is filled with people you can'r believe are anything but real.

Despite a few, horrible exceptions like Wishmaster and Friday the 13th, there usually has to be at least one great, original film before eight to ten extremely hackneyed sequels can be created. With this in mind, I must say that the first Hellraiser is one spectacular horror flic. Of course, if you're planning to watch it for the first time now, then the special effects and gore may be a little disappointing due to the fact that it was made in the 80s. However, the plot behind Hellraiser is completely authentic.
