Excellent soundbar

I recently got this sound bar and all I can say is that this is the better sounding soundbar out in the market. First thing you’ll notice is the size and heft of both the soundbar itself and the included sub-woofer. The size of the soundbar itself is almost the length of a 65” tv and is quite heavy. That being no surprise since it has 13 drivers. Likewise the sub-woofer is rather large for what comes with soundbars.
Setup is a breeze as pairing is automatic once you power-on the unit. And operation is pretty much forward as the remote control is as simplistic as possible. There are dedicated buttons for the sub-woofer and Bluetooth for quick access. A sound mode for scrolling three sound modes. And a settings mode to control volumes for the different drivers.
It took me quite sometime to review this unit as I have tried to watch several movies to assess the soundbar’s audio output. Titles I’ve watched initially which are either in Dolby 5.1/7.1 and DTS include LOTR, The Hobbit, U-571, Behind Enemy Lines and Avatar. I have also watch GOTR and John Wick which has Dolby Atmos and American Made which has DTS-X. Overall I am quite impressed with the audio output as there this sound clarity and thumping bass which doesn’t distort and muffle the soundtrack.
That said the unit is still front heavy in audio and missing an immersive sound experience unlike the more expensive HW-N950 which is the same with the addition of two rear speakers which makes it a 7.1.4 system compare to the 5.1.2 system the HW-N850 has. Fortunately, this unit can be upgraded with the SWA-9000s making it a 7.1.2 system. Still a bit short compared to the N950 though.
But the good thing though is that Samsung put the SWA-9000S on sale and that made a whole lot of difference when I purchased. So this is a fairly cheap way to upgrade your system if you can't justify the $400 to $500 price difference between the N950 and N850. With the rear speakers setup, here are now ambient sounds that I can hear which I didn't hear before. Fortunately as of this writing Samsung put the SWA-9000S on sale everywhere thus prompting me to add the SWA-9000S wireless speakers to the N850.
There are other nice features included in this soundbar albeit Samsung specific such as connecting via wi-fi and using the Smartthings app thereby gaining more features to the unit. Also the unit is supposedly Aexa enable too. While these are nice to have features, I am sticking to my setup having the additional wireless speakers as good quality immersive sound is what one primarily looks for in an audio system. And in this regard, I am quite satisfied with the output the Samsung HW-N850 and would definitely recommend it to others.
