Doesn't Hold Up But Garner Is Great

I saw this movie at a free preview screening back in 2005. I wasn't expecting much because comic book movies are usually disappointing, but this one was actually good. The special effects and action sequences were well done and didn't look over-the-top.
The cinematography was beautiful and the colors almost seemed alive, they were so vibrant. I don't see many movies where the colors make that much of an impact.
I didn't find the dialogue corny or forced. There was only one moment where the audience laughed "inappropriately," and that was at a character's name. The acting was excellent, in my opinion. Jennifer Garner and Goran Visnjic have a natural rapport and Kirsten Prout was very impressive. I hadn't seen her in anything previously. All three of them did a good job of giving these characters some depth and making you care about them, which can sometimes be hard in this type of movie. The villains were, for the most part, subtle and not in your face, as with many movies of this genre.
Overall, I liked this movie and recommend it to anyone who likes a good action movie with non-cardboard characters. In addition to the action, there is drama, romance (but not too much), elements of sci-fi and a few laughs

Forgotten Denzel Classic

While Denzel already had his first Oscar before this movie came up, it's not mentioned among his other pre-Training Day flicks. I'll be the first to admit that I am a sucker for military dramas. I am also a very big Denzel Washington fan. Thus, for me anyway, this movie had it all.

Still Holds Up Twenty One Years Later

The nineties were a great time for non CGI aciton flicks. If you love excellent action flicks like The Rock, or like to see big-budget blockbusters, a la ID4, this is the movie for you. If you are expecting another Usual suspects type or Pulp Fiction forget about it. Spacey and Jackson are awesome in this movie. The script and direction are all that keeps this film from becoming significant. I found myself so entertained and drawn in by the overall story, that I wished I was a little more stupid, so the plot would be a bit less predictable and the lines a little less awkward. In the end, though I highly recommend this movie. It won't touch you or leave you shaken, but it'll really get the pulse-pounding.

Different But Good

I think the reason this film is being trashed by so many reviewers is because this scenario could & probably has happened to men, first off I will say I am not a fan of Eli Roth in any way, his "Hostel" films I refuse to watch, I don't mind gore if it serves the story, but those films are just gory for the sake of being gory, at first I had reservations about watching this one, but having seen Ana De Armas in the recent "Blade Runner 2049" & being a fan of Keanu Reeves I figured it was time to give this one a look seeing that she is in it & it being a $5.00 add-on-item, I figured why not, because of the reviews I expected to hate this film but was pleasently surprised at how effective its suspense was, suspense thrillers are rare in films these days....now on too the review....

Not to Shabby

The Movie is about one Judge -- the baddest and most feared/respected of them all (Judge Joseph Dredd). The movie adaptation follows the formula for many action movies of this time. Rob Schneider plays comic relif (small time thief who happens to be in the wrong time) throughout the movie. Diane Lane is the young new Judgette (sp?) and love interest of Stallone (no romance in the movie though just a bit of URST). Diane is as always lovely and such a wonderful acress. Stallone plays the cold idealistic Ethical Super Judge Dredd. Armand Assante plays a wonderful villain with a very cool bad Robot bodyguard. Max von Sydow and Jürgen Prochnow also play some wonderful supporting characters who deliver some wonderful performances. The acting is first rate and I can say that only Stallone could have played this role -- almost as if it was written for him.

Samuel L At His Best

Here comes something a little unexpected in the dawning weeks of the Summer blockbuster season, it's an old school action-thriller with a film noir soul, the kind of movie in the hard manned style that a few decades earlier could have easily starred screen greats like Lee Marvin or Steve McQueen. Playing just a few screens away from superheroes, aliens, and water logged battleships is this, a movie relying on acting, emotion, thought, empathy and good old fashion butt kicking. However, don't let me sell you a bottle of snake oil, The Samaritan is the kind of movie where the sum of it's parts are better than it is as a whole, but it does offer some juicy cuts.
Samuel L. Jackson, in one of his best roles in ages, stars as Foley, a former grifter just being released from prison after serving a twenty-five year stretch. With no intent of ever going back, however old troubles from his past come looking for him in the form of Ethan (Luke Kirby). Ethan is the son of Foley's former partner, whom Foley killed in sucoomanstances that bear special consideration. Not looking for revenge, exactly, but wanting Foley to join him in a confidence scheme. Foley refuses in hopes of starting his life anew.

Gangster Classic

New Jack City is one criminally underrated Gangster picture. It's very well made and directed by Mario Van Peebles with an outstanding cast. The hugely underrated Wesley Snipes gives an incredible powerhouse performance as the very intimidating, frighteningly evil drug kingpin (who should've been nominated) and Ice-T, Judd Nelson and Mario Van Peebles are excellent as the cops who are after him. Chris Rock gives a very good and different performance as a junkie as well. The cinematography is beautiful that looks stunning on this wonderful blu ray. It also has one of the best early 90s hip hop soundtracks in movie history. This is a must own especially for fans of the Gangster genre. It's a classic!

One of the year's best

I saw crazy things today that eleven years ago I never even hoped I'd get to see cinematically. Avengers: Endgame services the fans in the best way possible, and since when did "fan service" come off as such a dismissive turn of phrase, anyway? Yes, it's three hours long - plus 21 minutes of trailers - and you need to plan around that (ie: take tiny sips or sneak in a catheter). Yes, the first hour is slow, except slow doesn't necessarily translate to bad. It's an obligatory slow burn that allows the drama to play out, as the leftover Avengers are still coping with the ramifications of Infinity War. And you absolutely need that first hour for things to pay off in the end. The third act is bananas. And I do think Endgame justifies every minute of its three hours plus' screen time.
