I was skeptical that this design would actually stay in place and not go flying off at the first sharp turn. The first thing I did was go to an empty parking lot and take tight, fast turns in both directions. It didn't move. In 6 months of use, it hasn't moved.
I think it works for three reasons.
1. Its base is fairly sticky -- not stick-on, just permanently tacky so that it does not slide. It's far better than suction clamps, as they do not make a seal on the textured dashboards.
2. The base is weighted.
3. The base is flexible but keeps its shape once bent. So it further resists sliding because it conforms to the curve of the dash. When you move it from one rig to another, you press it into the new shape.
I thought it kind of pricy at $20, but I am very happy with it.
