As a lifelong fan of Darren Aronofsky, I knew to expect something out of the ordinary, and possibly something difficult to digest. I was not disappointed. Pacing is slow, a little confusing, and it's hard to cheer for Jennifer Lawrence's character. This is definitely NOT the 'feel good event of the year'. If that's what you need/want in a movie, STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS. Saying more risks being too revealing.

Ok, so I'm a sucker for animated revisionist historical cyberpunk scifi retrofuturistic family dramas with talking cats. But, who ISN'T these days??!!!
There's a reason this film currently has a 96% on Rotten Tomatoes. Everything about it simply works.
Perhaps not for smaller children, as the plot is a little too complex, but this is the kind of animated film that every other animated film should aspire to be.

Loosely based on history, this 'thoughtfully paced" [translation: a little slow] anime will immerse you in the character's experience and leave you feeling connected to the Hokusai family. It's also a visual masterpiece. If you can't see it in a theatre, watch on the biggest TV you can find. Average bonus features, but that's not why you buy a movie like this anyway.
