Annie's Reviews

"The #1 Thriller of All Time" comes to DVD as part of Hollywood Pictures' Collector's Edition series. Fans of M. Night Shyamalan's ingenious supernatural story will revel in the 1.85:1 widescreen (enhanced for 16 x 9 televisions) format and 5.1 Surround Sound which fully capture the intricate details of the film and tangible paranormal presence. What makes this DVD especially enjoyable, however, is the multitude of behind-the-scenes features, many of which are narrated by Shyamalan and other key crew members. Included are a French-language track; a "Storyboard to Film Comparison" of the anniversary dinner scene; cast and crew interviews; a fascinating "Music and Sound Design" presentation that illustrates how the incredibly creepy background track was created; and "Reaching the Audience," an explanation of how word of mouth made this movie the cultural phenomenon it became. Also included are "Rules and Clues," a guide to the hints threaded throughout the movie before its explosive, surprise ending; four deleted scenes, one of which is an extended finale; and an interview with Shyamalan in which he talks about his background and how it affected his filmmaking. Theatrical and TV trailers as well as cast and crew biographies round things out. Finally, viewers should click on the beribboned box for a real treat -- Shyamalan's first horror film, "Nightmare on Old Gulf," which was written, produced, directed, and starred in by the film phenom when he was 11 years old.

An intriguing movie

This movie fooled me. I had no idea how it would end and was sad at the ending. A good movie that held my attention throughout. Lots of sadness, happiness, memories and "ouchy" moments. Also a lot of "put myself in their shoes" moments that I did not care for.
It was a good movie!

Exciting Movie

I loved this movie because my favorite actor was in it--Sam Elliott. It was an exciting movie involving crime, deceit, theft, bad guys and good guys.
I like this movie every time I watch it! Recently found it on sale at Best Buy and will watch it any time I choose to. Movie is not for children. Too much violence and a lot of bad scenes.
Will recommend to adults only.

The Civil War epic Gettysburg receives the star treatment from Warner with some spectacular results. Image quality is far better than would be expected. The picture, which is framed at the original aspect ratio of 1.78:1 and employs an anamorphic transfer, is nicely detailed with strong colors and excellent detail. The sound is also very impressive. A new 5.0 Dolby Digital is balanced very well between dialogue, sound effects, and music. None of these elements overwhelms the other making for a smart sound mix. Also available is a surround track in French and subtitles in English and French. The big surprise for this title is the number of supplemental features. Of strong interest is a commentary track from director/screenwriter Ronald F. Maxwell, cinematographer Kees Van Oosrum, author James M. McPherson, and historian Craig Symonds. While there are significant gaps between comments (only selected scenes have commentary), this track is still filled with fascinating information, both from the filmmaking and historical perspectives. In addition are two documentaries, the first hosted by actor Martin Sheen and covers the making of this film, while the second, the Oscar-nominated "The Battle of Gettysburg," narrated by Leslie Nielsen, takes a look at the battle in general. Both are fascinating in their own respects, and are complimented with a short "location" featurette with additional footage taken on the set. Finally rounding out this fine disc are the theatrical trailer and television spots, plus filmographies for some of the cast and the director, a battlefield map, and some additional interviews with the cast and crew. If there is one complaint about this DVD, it's the reluctance of Warner to use two discs for longer movies. At four-plus hours, most studios would split the movie over two discs, but in the case of Gettysburg, a DVD-18 has been used, meaning the movie is split over two sides, each with two layers, possibly creating problems with handling. Still, that is a small complaint for such a nice overall package.

Too long to enjoy

As much as I love history, especially the Civil War, this movie absolutely wore me out--it was way too, too, too, too, too, too, too, to, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, too, long and I count not remember the names of the key players as it hopped around so much. I truly enjoyed the presentation, but the length of the movie was too long for me to enjoy it! Great production, footage, but too darn long to stay focused!!!!

Garry Marshall's comedy Overboard comes to DVD with a widescreen transfer that preserves the original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. English and French soundtracks are rendered in Dolby Digital Surround. Subtitles are available in both of these languages as well. Supplemental materials include a trailer and a booklet featuring trivia and production notes. This is a solid disc, although the film itself is less than spectacular. Fans of Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell will certainly want to give this DVD a look.

I enjoyed this movie better the second time that the first time I watched it. My grandchildren thought it was hilarious and watched three additional times on the same day. We had great family fun and I'm sure we will watch it again with other family and our friends.
