Do not bother with the 18W Adapter
on December 12, 2021

Just an FYI to anyone interested — though they may look identical, only this item (the 20W adater) has the power delivery profiles to most efficiently charge the iPhone 12 & 13 series and the 18W adapter does not work at all with the MagSafe charger. I know, the 18W adapters were the last ones packed in (with the 11 Pro series), but the retail price is only $19 on the 20W and it works with everything current as far as iOS goes. I’ve had three for over a year and not a problem with any of them. You cannot go wrong with this item.

You can’t beat free, but you won’t want to leave

Already a fantastic deal at its regular price, the recent addition of lossless audio and (for those with an outboard headphone DAC/amplifier) Hi-Res lossless audio on some items (all the way up to 192KHz@24-Bit) and Spatial Audio in Dolby Atmos — and not just for streaming, but you can download for offline play with all of these features —and without raising the price at all makes Apple Music an excellent value, and it is available on Android as well for those who were not aware. The family plan is probably the best deal as far as family plans go too - 6 totally separate accounts for $14.99/month vs. $9.99/month for an individual subscription. Take advantage of the free trial and I think you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the features and at just how broad the catalog really is — and they are ALWAYS adding more, both new and old, remastered, expanded editions, etc.

It doesn’t cost a thing to see what you’re missing

I know not everyone will be willing to pay for ANYTHING on YouTube. I admit. I’ve never watched any of the YouTube Originals (formerlyYouTube Red), but as an ad-supported to remain free service, as it has grown the length and number of ads on YouTube is more than I can take. It’s worth it to me alone because ALL CONTENT is ad-free, but you also gain access to a library of free movies in YouTube Movies and also have a full YouTube Music Premium subscription included (sort of a cross between the late YouTube Music Key subscription and the late Google Play Music All Access subscription service) which really does offer some music you just won’t find anywhere else and the Offline Mixtape function in the YouTube Music app is a lot of fun too. I have no problem with what you get for the price. Give the free three-month trial a chance. I think you’ll find it hard to go back after your trial is over.

Use the Apple Gift Card to get products, accessories, apps, games, music, movies, TV shows, and more. Spend it on in-app content, books, subscriptions like iCloud+ storage to secure files from all your Apple devices. This gift card does it all. And then some.

If they own ANYTHING Apple, don’t hesitate.

The fact that Apple has eliminated the difference between iTunes gift cards and Apple Store gift cards alone makes this so much better as a gift card. They can use it for anything through the iTunes Store, the App Store, subscriptions to Apple TV channels, Apple One subscriptions, iCloud+ subscriptions , or use it towards anything they’ve had their eye on in the Apple Store and use it in the store, or in the online store via the web or the Apple Store app. If they use ANYTHING Apple, they’ll have a use for this gift card without question as opposed to the old days when you were never sure if they were enough of a music fan that they would get much use out of an iTunes Gift Card.

Fantastic Value on a Fantastic Platforn

Personally, I loved TIDAL HiFi for the sound quality from my iPhone without a DAC (so limited to 48Khz@24-Bit) and didn’t have the ability to hear the difference in the TIDAL Masters (of which there were FAR more than so had imagined) since I didn’t have an MQA decoder either. What I heard was incredible. I can only imagine how much better it COULD be. Time to start saving up for a good portable headphone DAC/AMP that has the circuitry to do the MQA unfold and render real-time in hardware and handle native DSD decoding in hardware as well (none of this conversion to PCM audio, which may be much cheaper to implement, but totally defeats the purpose of DSD and really downplays its sonic advantages over PCM audio)). No, TIDAL HiFi does not deliver any content in DSD format (a shame, really), but it gives you an idea of the fact hat it sounds fantastic as is, but that it can deliver so much more — but how much more depends on how much you are willing to pay for hardware to take advantage of it.
One thing is for sure — don’t even bother shipping around, Best Buy has HANDS DOWN the best deal on TIDAL subscriptions, period. Like half the price of anyone else. Don’t sit on the fence, at these prices you can’t go wrong!

Enjoy an authentic sound with these Sony 1AM2 headphones. Their 40mm HD drivers provide clear, precise sound across all frequencies, and their separate left and right channels reduce crosstalk for balanced audio. These Sony 1AM2 headphones are lightweight, with pressure-relieving cushioned earpads for comfortable all-day wear.

There is nothing Hi-Res Audio at all about these
on November 3, 2021

I owned the previous MDR-1A, and whereas they were truly a revelation compared to even a $600 pair of Sennheiser headphones I had owned previously, the “improved” follow-on model is middle-of-the-road as headphones go at best. They feel much “cheaper”, the the low-end is muffled, and the high end is bright to the point of being shrill. The only reason I got these was because the single-ended cable on my MDR-1A’s went out, Sony service at first said that they would ship a replacement cable, but then a couple of weeks later contacted me to tell me that I’d have to send everything in to them. I went to just buy another pair, as they had been on the market several years and ended up with this “improved” model because little did I know they had recently discontinued the MDR-1A and replaced it with these (at the same price point). I would say definitely NOT an improvement, more like a way to cut production costs drastically and keeping the price the same probably double the profit margin. I would have returned them and moved up to the MDR-Z7, but it too had been replaced by the MDR-Z7M2 that I have read is the same story. I don’t understand Sony — with the Hi-Res Audio initiative they came out guns blazing with products that truly met that moniker, only to within a few years seemingly abandon them (everywhere but he Japanese market). It’s like a repeat a decade later of the incredible push and high quality components and discs for SACD, and today you’re hard pressed to even find a mention that it ever existed on any Sony website. For their part, “audiophiles” have been a big part of the problem in both cases. Even when there was a full thriving line of ES components, just because Sony’s largest sales came from mass-market components and not niche “boutique” products at prices to match, they immediately dismissed any Sony Audio components as cheap garbage. I guess that’s why Soby offers so few Hi-Res Audio components and the ES line of audio components is essentially dead.
Bottom line: The MDR-1A’s were a brilliant pair of headphones that sounded like a pair that cost well above twice the price they sold for. A $50 pair of Sony headphones I bought in the early 90’s sounded better than the MDR-1AM2’s.

Nearly perfect

There have been oh so many releases of the original Halloween on home video (it may surprise some of you to know that CRITERION even released an all-out special edition in a LaserDiac box set a long time ago), and starting with that release, and continuing through the DVD and Blu-Ray eras ALL versions have looked great thanks to NOT being cropped from 2.35:1 to 1.33:1. John Carpenter had very specific requirements in his contract when he shot this film right down to the lab he wanted To process and print the film. He made SURE that this would look like a very technically accomplished film right out of the gate. There HAVE been some differences when it come to color timing — some drastic, in various versions, but it has never looked bad. And as expected from a film shot on 35mm utilizing the best technology available at the time from the original camera negative right down to the duplication of the theatrical prints, it looks even more stunning than it ever has before on UltraHD Blu-Ray. I can’t complain at all. Sure I can — it only comes with the UltraHD Blu-Ray and a standard Blu-Ray. This seems down to the fact of Disney’s refusal to ever participate in the otherwise ubiquitous Ultraviolet digital copy system and creation of Disney Movies Anywhere so that they had total control over distribution of digital copies of their films. Well folks, all they did was drop the Disney from the name and it’s now known as Movies Anywhere — and after luring Warner, Universal, and Fox as sufficient to doom the future of Ultraviolet, it seems they slammed the door in the face of anyone else joining Movies Anywhere — notably Paramount, MGM, and Lionsgate (the distributor of his disc) as well as any smaller or independent studios and even shutting the door on any Miramar releases WHICH THEY OWN! So l, my complaint is that you do not get the customary Digital Copy as you do with most Blu-Rays and nearly all UHD Blu-Rays these days because one company decided to overthrow an open distribution system that had been in place for nearly a decade and had worked welll. HeybMickey, you’re the real Boogey Man.

I’m just a bit torn on this one

First of all, let me just say top shelf independent horror film from the late 70’s (yes, released in 1983 theatrically, but shooting started in 1979 on and off for the next year or two). And let me say that what has been done here presentation-wise with a very respectable looking 4K HDR scan of a quote aged 16mm negative is amazing. But that’s just it. I have more copies of this film on more formats than I can count. I initially saw it on the original Thorn EMI VHS taken from a well-worn 35mm blow-up print and it was truly scary. The 3-disc LaserDisc box set from Elite Entertainment had the same feel (and was it’s last and best presentation on any analog video source). Then came the numerous DVD and Blu-Ray editions, each time with the film looking more and more pristine, but also opting to matte what was shot as a full-frame film off for modern 1.78:1 sets and the numerous additions and removals of a dubious optical effect. For me, it has lost a lot of the scare factor and played way too heavily on the humorous aspects that would be turned up to 11 in the quasi-remake “Evil Dead II” (which I did see on first theatrical run and due to its bigger budget has had a pretty consistent look and feel on all home video formats), as it has lost a lot of its technical issues (insufficient lighting in some scenes, the grubby look of the 16mm blow-up prints that had already made midnight movie rounds). Don’t let me warn you off from it — it’s still a very influential film in the genre and is essential viewing. But just prepare to be shocked that a film released nearly 40 years ago looks more like one released within the past decade. Whether that affects your suspension of disbelief will be an individual matter.

I did see this during its theatrical run and during its release season it was absolutely one of the best horror movies, with heaping helpingss of suspense thriller thrown in along with an ending you didn’t see (or didn’t want to see) coming. Nice Blu-Ray, excellent price @ Best But. Just a shame it wasn’t released as a UHD Blu-Ray because several lesser horror films released in the same season were and this one really deserved the deluxe treatment over most of the others.

Can I use this headphone in a normal 3-terminal 3.5mm headphone jack in my radio, computer, laptop or Sony Walkman CD player? Thanks!

Yes, you can. They come with two cables — a standard single-ended (unbalanced) 3.5mm with the typical TRS male plug with an inline single remote button and microphone so that it may be used with cell phones and the other cable is a balanced cable without the inline remote or mic (which you would not want in such a cable with a 4.4mm TRRS male plug that would not apply for the use cases you’ve mentioned.
