Gift cards not honored!

I bought 2 gift cards of $50 each from Best buy in west Nyack Ny as presents.
For my embarrassment, these 2 gift cards did not work. I went to see the manager at best buy at palisades mall where i bought them and he told me that unfortunately they can not refund me the money because gift cards are like money.
They are thieves!! This is an inside job stealing the money of the gift cards!
