Overall, the Surface Laptop 2 is an excellent laptop computer, just like last year’s version. It works well, does everything that you expect a laptop to do without any weird compromises or gotchas, and looks nice to boot. It’s easy to see this being the default laptop choice for Windows customers and even those who have been longing for Apple to update the MacBook Air and aren’t happy with Apple’s other MacBook options. Microsoft’s Surface Laptop 2 is, from top to bottom, a worthy sequel to the original device. This new model vastly improves the laptop’s power profile and, while it doesn't include tangible design changes, it ultimately achieves the most pure Windows 10 experience on a laptop.

After years of piecemeal DVDs housing a few episodes per disc, Beavis & Butt-Head finally received a creator-approved treatment on disc with this 3-DVD set from Paramount. Surprisingly, Beavis & Butt-Head: The Mike Judge Collection Vol. 1 turns out to be a mixed blessing. Video and audio quality are fine for what the show is: Beavis & Butt-Head was made quickly and "on the cheap," so it was never designed to look pristine. Everything included here looks fine and sounds decent (in fact, the old stereo mixes sound surprisingly crisp). The only problem with the episodes is that a good portion of them have been re-edited by show creator Mike Judge, losing lines, gags, and in some cases, entire minutes of footage. Thus, these re-edited episodes essentially rewrite history and do not present an honest representation of what viewers saw during the show's original MTV run. This after-the-fact editing is unfortunate because the un-doctored episodes show that the program holds up pretty well. Beavis & Butt-Head: The Mike Judge Collection Vol. 1 fares better in the area of extras. The third disc is devoted entirely to bonus features: first up is a series of 11 music videos that feature Beavis and Butt-Head riffing over them. The disc also offers a series of appearances the duo made on MTV, including appearances at the VMA awards and a Thanksgiving special with Kurt Loder. However, the best of the extras is "The Taint of Greatness, Part 1," a comprehensive featurette that covers the show's beginnings and includes new interviews with Judge and the many others who worked on the show. It's funny, fast-paced and full of nice surprises like footage of the show's original test screenings and readings of angry letters from irate viewers. Ultimately, Beavis & Butt-Head: The Mike Judge Collection, Vol. 1 is a decent value and offers some fun extras but the re-editing of several episodes is likely to rub its target audience the wrong way. As a result, they might want to check this set out before they commit to buying it.

Shows like “South Park” and “Family Guy” probably have a lot to thank the MTV cartoon for. “Beavis and-head” dropped television standards to an all new low, paving the way for the bathroom humor of modern day cartoons. Thankfully most shows of the same type these days at least use that bathroom humor as they offer up satire or social commentary - something Beavis and head would never attempt. Thinking about the evolution of cartoons on TV that way sort of redeems the low brow humor Beavis and --head brought to the small screen. Although it never could have been done by the two themselves, at least eventually their witless chuckles and clueless entendres led to something good.
Volume 1 of The Mike Judge Collection is a three disc set that includes forty episodes of “Beavis and Butt-head”. Before I go any further then that, let’s explore that whole concept of “an episode”. In the collection an episode isn’t the half-hour segment that ran on MTV. Instead an episode is one of the short cartoons, usually ten to twelve minutes in length. Typically the half-hour show was made up of two episodes with music videos in between the three acts. Unfortunately those music videos aren’t here though, most likely because bands and studios don’t graciously give permission to people who mock them as badly as Judge did. So what you end up with is forty single plot stories, ten to twelve minutes long. When the episodes are displayed this way suddenly it becomes very apparent just how simplistic the plots are, and just how stupid the characters are. Despite that, after four or five episodes I found myself chuckling at all of the stupid jokes. These really are some of the best episodes and a good reminder that even stupid humor has a place in the universe.
Since forty episodes only take up two discs, the third disc is full of bonus material. The centerpiece of the disc is a great featurette: Taint of Greatness: The Journey of Beavis and Butt-head, Part 1. The half-hour featurette explores the origins and history of the show and Judge’s inspirations for many of the reoccurring characters. It’s slightly odd to see Judge, who speaks in an extremely subdued manner, suddenly break into character voices during the featurette. It just doesn’t sound right, and it almost hurts my brain trying to comprehend the voice coming from Judge’s mouth. I felt the same way when I once saw Dan Castellaneta voice Homer Simpson on camera. It’s one of those odd side effects of cartoons - you get so used to the voice coming from the animated character it’s hard to reconcile the voice coming from anyone else.
The other great thing about the featurette is how honest Judge is about his work. At one point he refers to not wanting to do a ------ episode every week because he didn’t want the magic to disappear - “if you can call it magic” Judge says with great candor. Judge realizes “Beavis and --head” isn’t exactly Emmy material, but at the same time it has bankrolled several other projects for the creator as well as quite a few years of his life, so he can’t quite renounce his creation.
Also on the bonus disc are eleven videos done up “Beavis and Butt-head” style, which means some of them are shown in their entirety while others may only be a couple of seconds long (long enough for the two idiots to change the channel). Since the videos were my favorite part of the show it’s great to see a few brave souls who allowed their videos to be used. It’s really a bummer there weren’t more willing to take the humiliation in exchange for my personal entertainment.
During the height of their popularity the boys made several appearances on other MTV programs which are also included here. You have to wonder how celebrities like Kurt Loder and David Letterman took to running skits with the animated duo, particularly Loder who co-hosted a Thanksgiving special with Beavis and -head during the height of his MTV News career. Of course neither Letterman or Loder reached Carson Daly status on the MTV scale, and you don’t see him on here interacting with animated creations, so maybe that says just who the popular ones in those skits were.
The one thing that is noticeably missing from the set is any kind of commentary from Judge. Considering the set is put together based on what episodes he thinks are great or mediocre, it would be nice to get his impressions on why these episodes deserve a spot here. I know why I think “The Great Cornholio” is one of the best “Beavis and --head” episodes around, but why does Mike Judge? Minus that commentary though, this is a well assembled set for a television show, especially considering it’s not a “complete season” type set. Some people had to actually put some thought into these episodes. I just wish Judge had shared some of those thoughts with us. However, considering Beavis and --head’s previous DVD exposure has been extremely lacking, I’ll take this set happily even with its small flaws.

these are extremely comfortable and they fit and stay on extremely well. I was very interested in the recording technology and the ability to have enhanced listening capabilities. I give it a A+ for this. I've been pretty blown away by this headset. Although I think the binaural recording aspect may be more of a novelty than anything else for most people, the quality of the sound from this headset is worth enough on its own even if you do not use the recording function as much as you imagined. (My frame of reference for sound recording and playback comes from working in the sound department on movies such as Scarface, The Cotton Club,and Dirty Dancing.)
Recording with this set - a microphone is part of each earpiece - is an amazing experience. Instead of a rather flat soundtrack, what you record is a completely immersive sound experience. You are recording the sounds happening all around you and when you play it back, you feel as though you are still in the place where you made the recording - you not only hear what was in front of you, as you would if recording with a directional microphone, but you hear what was to the left, right and behind you. It really is a 3D sound-surround experience.
Listening to binaural recordings, depends of course on how well they were recorded, but the good ones can be a truly wondrous experience. Although binaurally recorded music and videos are not commonplace, I expect that they will become more and more popular now that the means of recording has been simplified to the point where anyone with this headset can make a recording that was once the province of professionals only.
Aside from making and listening to binaural recordings, this headset is phenomenal for listening to pretty much any well-done recording. The sounds are crisp, clear and separate. The upper, mid and lower ranges of both treble and bass are nicely delineated and don't mush together (except in the case of bad recordings). The drums in a jazz recording I have became a revelation when heard through this headset. Classical recordings have nice depth, but those recorded binaurally can be simply amazing.
Be aware that looking for binaural recordings to listen to on the internet will yield a lot of questionable results - "binaural" is also the word used for mood, "brain wave" and white noise recordings. So you have to work at it to get sense of the good stuff vs the junk.
A unique feature of this headset is Situational Awareness, which is really two different modes of listening. One is Noise Cancellation and this headset does that as well as can be expected with earbuds, but it also has a Transparent mode that allows you to hear what's going on around you. Needless to say, this is the feature you want if you listen to music while out on the streets. It's a great safety feature.
The earpieces are the most comfortable I think I've ever used. The part that loops around the ear is made of a very soft and pliable rubber that you honestly don't feel. It comes with a variety of different sized soft caps so you can get a good fit without being to loose or too tight. I actually have to wear two different sizes, so I really appreciate having the option to do so.
Headphones and earbuds are very hard to review because no one hears exactly what another person hears. But I really love this headset. It is fun to make and playback recordings with it and it offers an extremely high level of listening.
As headphones go, with few exceptions like perhaps KOSS which offers both value and quality in certain of their headsets, you really do get what you pay for. This headset is expensive but, in my opinion, the quality matches the price.
