It's not of much use for the average GPS or smartphone. These devices are too heavy for it. The magnet is not strong enough to hold them in place when a minimal jolt hits it.

How do you connect the wire to these banana jacks,what does the wire fasten to?
The plug is inserted into the center of the audio cable and held in place by the supplied collars. It is an easy setup and takes lest that 2 minutes to complete. I recommend reading the instructions completely before you start. Will make life very simple and easy for you.

Is there a way to listen to regular radio and/or online podcasts through the dock? I ask because it has such great sound and I would love to use for something other than sirius channels
It has an AUX plug. You can use that for alternative music sources.
