I see why this animated film won the Oscar. The animation is fantastic, like a comic book come to life. I also enjoyed all the different back stories for each Spider-Man and how different each one of them was. I also like the connection to traditional Spider-Man comic villains like Doc Oc but with a surprise.

The original just can’t be beat

Visually, the animation in this movie is gorgeous. I enjoyed the jokes like “mold spice” instead of old spice if you watched it closely. However, I did not enjoy the rap modern music as opposed to the original way Your a Mean One Mr. Grinch was sung.

I have very conflicted feelings about this movie. I enjoyed the cast of talented actors, but the plot seemed to be very convoluted. I kept trying to make it mesh with previous X-Men movies focusing on mutants and where they fit in that I enjoyed, but couldn’t make that happen. All the space energy stuff and aliens just seemed odd and didn’t mesh well with the X-Men franchise in general. I didn’t hate it, but I didn’t love it either.

No one can compete with the comic genius of Robin Williams as the genie, but consider Will Smith’s rendition without comparison and you can enjoy the movie on its own merits. It is a beautiful movie visually with solid performances by the live actors.
