The inmates of a German World War II Prisoners of War camp conduct an espionage and sabotage campaign right under the noses of their warders. While the enemy is often gullible, easily fooled or downright incompetent - the real strength of Hogan's men are the elaborate ruses and sometimes dangerous lengths they will go to complete their mission. Banner, Kenneth Washington, Larry Hovis, Special Features Full Frame . Language English Year 1965 Runtime 882 minutes

The film that helped establish Prince's public persona comes to DVD with this lackluster release from Warner Bros. The transfer is a standard, full-frame 1.33:1 image. The English soundtrack is rendered in Dolby Digital 5.1, while a French soundtrack is recorded in Dolby Digital Surround. English, Spanish, and French subtitles are accessible. Supplemental materials include production notes and theatrical trailers. The best aspect of this disc is the sound, which was also the best aspect of the movie. Considering Prince's stature as one of the superstars of the last 20 years, one wonders if a special edition release of this film on DVD might be in the works.

This five-disc set (packaged in three narrow plastic sleeves -- two discs/two discs/one disc -- in a slipcase) is a lot more entertaining than its predecessor, and not just because the producers, writers, and cast had hit their respective strides and were getting the biggest comedic bang for their buck -- there's also a ton of bonus material, a feature that the first season package sorely lacked, and most of it is delightful. Mostly the DVD producers have worked with deceased series star Bob Crane's wife Patricia Crane (who appeared on the series from the second season on under her screen name, Sigrid Valdis, as Colonel Klink's secretary, Fraulein Hilda), and, in return, have gotten access to a huge body of material from his estate. Crane does a commentary track for the first episode in which she played the role, and while she doesn't remember a huge amount about the production, she has lots of warm recollections of the cast and crew members who are no longer with us, and aspects of the production such as the controversy surrounding the series' setting and concept, and how it evolved from something very different (with help from the book Von Ryan's Express). Her commentary here, and over the 16 mm footage of her and Bob Crane's wedding (which took place on a soundstage adjoining the Hogan's Heroes set), is worth hearing for the human element it adds. Coming away from it, one gets a real sense of what the cast members were like as people; indeed, one suspects that John Banner must have been one of the nicest men ever to work in Hollywood, with Werner Klemperer not far behind in terms of charm. There's also a mildly entertaining five-minute blooper reel, and some much more interesting behind-the-scenes footage shot and narrated by Patricia Crane, plus a brace of CBS promo spots and various variety and comedy show appearances by the cast members (most notably Bob Crane on The Lucy Show), and spots with Crane doing Air Force recruiting pitches, rather surprisingly aimed at women. The best bonus feature, however -- apart from the commentary track -- is the selection of audio clips from Crane's mid-'60s radio show, where he was truly in his element. He had members of the cast on with him after the pilot was shot but before it was on the air, and these are nice, funny, candid moments that are worth as much as the series itself. As to the episodes, they look and sound wonderful, with deep rich color and contrasts, and amazing detail and resolution. Each episode is divided up into five chapters matching the breaks for credits and commercials, and some of the 30 episodes here are not only entertaining but intriguing in some of their underlying concepts. One show, on which Hogan runs up against a German general who has taken a psychological approach to understanding the captured American flyer, is fairly unsettling for a sitcom of this type; and there's even a reference to the 1944 plot on Hitler's life. Each disc opens automatically on an easy-to-use menu that provides smooth access to the special features and advances automatically as one runs through each item. The material is well organized and also assembled very logically in terms of depth, seriousness, and significance, with some of the best of it placed deep (but not so much so that it would be missed) in the two-panel special features menu.

Between 1976 and 1978, three principal stars of The Honeymooners (Jackie Gleason, Audrey Meadows and Art Carney) and one newcomer (Jane Kean, replacing Joyce Randolph as Trixie Norton) teamed up for four hour-long network specials that presented the final adventures of the Kramdens and the Nortons. The fourth of these, a program entitled Jackie Gleason's Honeymooners Christmas, aired in December 1978 and appears in this release. In it, Ralph drums up a get-rich-quick scheme that involves betting his and Alice's life savings, his mother-in-law's social security check, and Ed Norton's holiday bonus on a lottery jackpot.

Originally co-headlined by series favorites Fred MacMurray, Tim Considine, Don Grady, Stanley Livingston and William Frawley, the popular situation comedy My Three Sons ran from 1960 through 1965 on ABC and 1965 through 1972 on CBS. Season Two of the program included 36 episodes, spanning late September 1961 through early June 1962. This set contains exactly half of that season, with 18 episodes. It includes such adventures as "A Holidy for Tramp," "The Pencil Pusher," "Casanova Trouble," "Coincidence" and "Air Derby."

This reviewer was never much of a fan of My Three Sons, as the series always seemed more like a parody of family life -- at least, as it was known in New York City -- without a lot successful humor in it. But with the passage of 48 years since it went on the air, the series is now a historical artifact in pop-culture terms. With that in mind, one can appreciate some of its content better in 2008 than it was possible to do in 1960 -- starting with the 18 episodes in this three-disc set from Paramount. First, and most important, that's 18 chances to see William Frawley, one of the screen's great character actors and funny-men -- a man who worked with Charles Chaplin and Abbott & Costello, amongst numerous others -- in action. For another, there's a certain eeriness watching Fred MacMurray, the series' star, playing a warm-and-fuzzy hapless widower dad, at precisely the same career point where he was filling the big screen with venomous sleaziness in Billy Wilder's The Apartment -- indeed, one comes away with new respect for MacMurray as an actor. And then there are the three kids, Tim Considine, Don Grady, and Barry Livingston, and their day-to-day concerns in that more innocent age -- in many ways, My Three Sons was an extension of the sensibilities behind Father Knows Best, and both series had in common director Peter Tewksbury. Paramount has done right by the program here, at least as far as the clean, sharp black-and-white full-screen (1.33-to-1) film-to-video transfers. The episodes here look and sound a lot better than these same shows did in their incarnation on Nick-At-Nite in the early 1990's. And it's a pleasure, too, to see other artifacts of the era restored -- most especially the end credits with the images of various Chevrolet vehicles, Chevrolet being the show's original sponsor (and sponsors were visible everywhere in those days, and even occasionally got ownership of the series). That and the original Frank DeVol theme music, with the other elements, made this trip into the past worth it for this reviewer, especially as the shows are well-transferred; it's safe to say they look better today than they did when broadcast in 1960-61. As with other Paramount TV-based DVDs, the chapter-breaks on each show match the credit and commercial breaks points. Each platter opens to a simple, easy-to-use two-layer menu with "Play All" and individual episode access. There are no bonus features, which is sort of a shame, as all three actors who played MacMurray's sons are still with us to speak for themselves and the series.
