It is nice to finally have (almost) all of the Rankin-Bass specials in one box set. In previous years, it seemed like only the most famous ones (Rudolph, Frosty, and Santa Claus is Comin to Town) were given the spotlight while other “smaller” specials such as “The Little Drummer Boy” were only included as bonus features, essentially taking a backseat. It is nice that even the lesser known (though lower quality in my opinion) specials such as Frosty’s Winter Wonderland, Rudolph’s Shiny New Year, Leprechaun’s Christmas Gold, and even the theatrically released movie “Rudolph and Frosty’s Christmas In July,” just to name a few. Technically the only Rankin-Bass Christmas special that is not included is Santa Baby from 2001(?), though I assume this is due to not wanting to pay royalties to the late Eartha Kitt’s estate for use of her voice. It also only includes the Christmas specials, so Here Comes Peter Cottontail and Mad Monster Party are not included. Specials such as Frosty Returns, A Miser Bros. Christmas, and Rudolph on the Island of Misfit Toys are also not included, as those are not Rankin-Bass, but were outsourced to another animation studio. The set is packaged very nicely, which each disc getting its own sleeve instead of being stacked on top of each other to save money (Looking at you, WB!). It also includes a booklet that lists the specials by their original release date and includes a brief 3-4 line summary of each special’s plot. However, the way contents of each disc are bizarre and seem aribirtary. The specials/discs are not in chronological order, certain discs only have 1 special, while some have 2, 3, or even 4. Disc 1, naturally is the first Rankin-Bass special “Rudolph”, however, disc 2 is Santa Claus is coming to town, even though the next one was “Cricket on the Hearth”, which is on disc 6. The discs themselves do not actually have numbers, so theoretically one could rearrange the discs to thier liking, however, The Year Without a Santa Claus, Nestor, and Rudolph’s Shiny New Year are on disc 3, even though Twas the night before Christmas (disc 5) aired before The Year Without a Santa Claus (disc 3) and “The Story of the First Christmas Snow” is on disc 8, with the next one, Frosty’s Winter Wonderland being on Disc 5. One does not “technically” need to watch these specials in release order, but it can be frustrating and confusing if you are trying to follow along with the booklet and needing to constantly switch discs. The set is also very light on bonus features, with only 6 of the 19 specials having special features related to them. It’s perfect if you don’t care about them being in perfect release order and want to finally have (almost) all the Rankin-Bass Christmas specials in one convenient set, but if you’re a bit more OCD and really like to delve deep into bonus features, this set may provide some frustrations and disappointments.
