With a new day comes a new leader for the sixth season, as Wayne Palmer (DB Woodside), brother of former president David Palmer, has taken the reins from the corrupt Charles Logan (Gregory Itzin). But President Palmer has little time to celebrate his election, as America faces yet another grave threat, this one from Islamic terrorist Abu Fayed (Adoni Maropis). By way of introduction, Fayed orders suicide bombings of 10 U.S. cities over a period of 11 weeks. But he's just getting warmed up-before Day 6 comes to a close, the threat goes nuclear. Trying to prevent further bloodshed, as always, is Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland). Out of the frying pan and into the fire, Jack is freed after months of torture in a Chinese prison, only to be handed over to Fayed in exchange for seemingly valuable intel. Tackling the day's dangers on the CTU front are new personnel additions Mike Doyle (Rick Schroder), who replaces the fallen Curtis Manning as director of field operations, and Agent Milo Pressman (Eric Balfour), who has a history of butting heads with his new boss. Day 6 also provides the first glimpse of Jack's blood relatives, his father Phillip (James Cromwell) and brother Graem (Paul McCrane). But it's far from a touching family reunion, as one of Jack's toughest challenges is determining where the other Bauers' loyalties lie. Several new faces make their way to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave., including steely vice president Noah Daniels (Powers Boothe) and presidential advisers Reed Pollock (Chad Lowe) and Thomas Lennox (Peter MacNicol), each of whom has his own agenda. Making a surprise return later in the day are former president Logan, his ex-wife Martha (Jean Smart), and former Secret Service agent Aaron Pierce (Glenn Morshower), all of whom play brief but pivotal roles in the season's developments.

Devil-may-care navy pilot Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is sent to Miramar Naval Air Station for advanced training. Here he vies with Tom Kasansky (Val Kilmer) for the coveted "Top Gun" award. When not so occupied, Mitchell carries on a romance with civilian consultant Charlotte Blackwood (Kelly McGillis). Shaken up by the death of a friend, Mitchell loses the Top Gun honor to Kasansky. Worried that he may have lost his nerve, Mitchell is given a chance to redeem himself during a tense international crisis involving a crippled US vessel and a flock of predatory enemy planes. The story wasn't new in 1986, but Top Gun scored with audiences on the strength of its visuals, especially the vertigo-inducing aerial sequences. The film made more money than any other film in 1986 and even spawned a 1989 takeoff, Hot Shots. An Academy Award went to the Giogio Moroder-Tom Whitlock song "Take My Breath Away."

Eighteen months after Day 1's foiled assassination plot, Day 2 finds Counter Terrorist Unit agent Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) officially stepping into the role of America's protector as he attempts to stop terrorists from setting off a bomb in Los Angeles. During his hunt for the nuclear device, Jack becomes romantically involved with Kate Warner (Sarah Wynter), who suspects her sister's fianc~ is working with Middle Eastern terrorists. Behind-the-scenes political intrigue centers on David Palmer (Dennis Haysbert), now president of the United States after surviving Day 1's assassination attempts. While Palmer supports Jack and CTU's efforts to track down the nuclear device, Vice President Jim Prescott (Alan Dale) and Palmer's own Cabinet question the president's decision-making ability and seek to undermine his authority at every turn. Meanwhile, Jack's daughter, Kim (Elisha Cuthbert), who was rescued from kidnappers in the first season, turns the tables during Day 2. This time, it's Kim who does the kidnapping---or, as she sees it, rescuing---of a child she's been babysitting in order to protect the girl from an abusive father. Later in the day, guest star Kevin Dillon appears as survivalist Lonnie McRae, who takes Kim hostage after convincing her that the nuclear bomb has already been detonated in L.A. Familiar faces returning to action include CTU agents Tony Almeida (Carlos Bernard) and Michelle Dessler (Reiko Aylesworth), whose relationship begins to develop romantically under the day's stress; CTU director George Mason (Xander Berkeley), who is exposed to radiation during a fierce gun battle; and First Lady Sherry Palmer (Penny Johnson Jerald), who reveals a dark side in her manipulations of the president for political gain.
