4K Picture DVD Sound
on March 5, 2022

Verified Purchase:Yes
Had the DVD, decided to toss it and upgrade to 4K. Happy I did. The picture quality is much improved. No surprise there. The sound takes a step up but not as much as one would expect. The sound is Dolby Digital 5.1 but the dimensionality just is not there. The sound is all on the front speakers. Viewed using a Panasonic DB-UB9000 which as a feature that supposedly converts 5.1 to 7.1. Well, it did nothing in this case. Video 5/5 Audio 3/5.

Video and Audio 5/5
on March 5, 2022

There is very much gray and whites in this film requiring luminance and contrast to be spot on. Both are. Excellent picture. Video 5/5. None of the scenes require much bass, most of the sound is vocal. The voices are clear, sharp and easily discernible. Audio 5/5.

Getting along with your in-laws can be tough. For newlywed Grace de Lomas (Samara Weaving), it's positively life-threatening. At a gathering with her husband's (Mark O'Brien) wealthy and offbeat family, Grace takes part in a game of hide-and-seek that turns into a desperate fight for survival when it becomes apparent that she's being hunted to the death by her new-and heavily armed-relatives. Laced with pitch-black humor, this quirky thriller also stars Adam Brody, Henry Czerny, and Andie MacDowell. 95 min. Widescreen; Soundtrack English.

5/5 - Both Video And Audio
on February 5, 2022
Posted by: Ragnar
Verified Purchase:Yes
In reviewing a disc, seldom comment on the story - but this is truly one of the best horror-comedies; an original story arc.
VIDEO: 5/5. Picture quality is what one expects of a quality Blu-ray transfer. The bride wears her white wedding dress throughout the movie; luminance and balance is very good. Excellent contrast as the majority of the action takes place at night and in a gloomy mansion. Black levels are deep.
AUDIO: 5/5. DTS Audio 5.1. Very good center channel. Voices are clear and easily discernible at all times, even when gramma mumbles.

Mediocre Upgrade From DVD
on February 5, 2022
Posted by: Ragnar
Verified Purchase:Yes
Disc played on a Panasonic DP-UB9000 and an LG OLED TV.
Still, the picture was subpar; washed out across the spectrum. Like an early DVD which is probably what this is - a tweaked transfer from DVD source material.
Which would also explain the flat sound - nothing boomed, voices never rose, the sound was monotone. Dolby Audio.
Video - 2 Stars (If DVD 3 stars but this is supposedly Blu-ray).
Audio- 3 Stars (because voices clear, distinct, easily understood)

Good Purchase Overall
on January 17, 2022

Verified Purchase:Yes
This reviewer has the DVD of this movie and decided to upgrade. The picture and sound of the DVD is, even for a DVD, not good.

VIDEO: 5/5. The picture is an appreciable enhancement over the DVD. Expected. Definitely 4K quality - perhaps more than the studio intended. Very good luminance and contrast. In fact, in the scene where the crew is inspecting the Norwegian camp, the viewer can easily tell the snow inside one room is fake. And, when the man runs into the snow burning and all aflame, it is clearly a man in an asbestos body suit. A bright picture. Viewers are able to see into the shadows, the dark scenes still have detail.
AUDIO: 3/5. Apparently, the studio used the same soundtrack from 1982. Center channel is clear and easily understandable. Thankfully. However, the sound is flat. The explosions do not boom, the voices even when shouting seem the same level as normal conversation amongst the crew. The most troubling, and hence only three stars, is the sound is sometimes stereo, other times 5.1, oher times something else in that there is sound coming out of every speaker but it does not match the screen. For example, when a door slams screen left the sound does not emanate out of the left front or left rear speaker.
So, the quality of the 4K video enhances the enjoyment of this movie, even amongst those who have watched it previously at lower resolutions. For those who expect the full package? Well, get used to disappointment - the audio tracks are acceptable by 1982 standards but not todays. In sum, purchasing this disc is mildly recommended.

Highest Recommendation

Watched this unit for over a year. Darn thing never went on sale anywhere. Even at this price, it sold out a couple of times, though. As it should have. This is the best 4K player available today.
CON: LG should stop sitting on its laurels. No excuse why LG has not put out a newer model with 7.1.2 (Dolby Atmos) capability. That’s it for the Cons.
PRO: REMOTE. Full size. Rectangular. For the cost of this unit, one would reasonably expect the buttons to be backlit. They are not. The remote has several buttons – Subtitle, Audio, Video Settings, HDR Settings, Sound Effects and High Clarity – not found on LG’s “Magic Remote.” These buttons give you direct access to various menus.
FEATURES. Literally, too many to list but includes De Blur, De-judder, Clear, Smooth, Real Cinema, OLED Motion Pro, etc., as well as the usual suspect. There are recommended values for each setting on the Internet.
A suggestion. The included “Basic Owner’s Manual” - a tiny 13-half-page pamphlet really - is useful as a fire starter in your fireplace. The actual - read useful - owner’s manual is available here – https://www.panasonic.com/content/dam/pim/au/en/DP/DP-UB9/DP-UB9000GN/DP-UB9000-User-Manual-Australia.pdf.
Yeah, Australia??? Right. But, it appears to be for the American market.
VIDEO: Own two LG 820s. Picture quality on a 77" LG OLED CX was marginally improved over the 820, noticeably in the Black and Contrast. Test disc and scene is always Atomic Blond 4K at the apartment fight sequence, which has motion, contrast and is dark. Good test sequence.
SOUND: Sound is output using the unit’s analog plugs to 2 pre-amps and 6 amps with 4 powered subs (18", two 10" and one 8"). Unit handled it all very well and produced concert-quality sound.
THX: THX certified. However, such certification has more to do with the design and materials used in the construction of whatever than with picture or sound quality. The final output must meet THX specifications. It is the mandatory build quality that makes THX certification desirable for the consumer.

Only Good Was Best Buy's No-Hassle Return
on September 3, 2021
Posted by: Ragnar
Verified Purchase:Yes
Bad. Bad. BAD.
Upon arrival, the eARC channel did not work. This is important because eARC transmits uncompressed audio; optical can only handle a compressed signal. And the unit would not shut off either from the remote or the manual button on the top of the soundbar.
Next, the remote from 5 feet was responsive about 50% of time. Had to repeatedly press the volume button.
Three days in, the other remote function buttons stopped working at all.
The rear speakers sounded as though they were receiving a - weak - signal from the Orion galaxy, just statically background noise - if you held your ear to the speakers.
On the 10th day, the volume would - on its own - go to maximum. Lowering the volume by repeatedly clicking the remote worked for about 10 seconds then back to maximum.
Now don't confuse that with the subwoofer. The sub made the kind of noise you would hear from the crowd at the 9th hole of a major golf tournament; which is to say - none.
I bought a box at Fed Ex, packaged it and returned the unit to Best Buy for a full refund on the 12th day. The only good experience was Best Buy's no-hassle return.

Some Improvement Over TV Speakers
on July 16, 2021
Posted by: Ragnar
Verified Purchase:Yes
THE GOOD: Sound? Linked to 86" LG which has decent downfiring speakers. Still, the soundbar improved the sound. Subwoofer linked to soundbar automatically@ 10' separation.
THE BAD: The soundbar is supposed to operate (on/off & volume) from the TV remote. Sometimes it does. Sometimes it does not.
This is NOT a 300W system. Most likely 80W.
Nor is this a 2.1 system. Stereo? No. Monaural? Yes. Left and right not discernible. Powered sub bass, however, is noticeable.
THE UGLY: Soundbar display is dimly lit.
Would recommend for a small to midsize bedroom.

Enjoy brilliant color and sound with this Panasonic Ultra HD Blu-ray player. The chroma processing technology maximizes the color of 4K/HDR content, and the 7.1-channel audio output produces lifelike surround sound when connected to a home audio system. The color signals received by this Panasonic Ultra HD Blu-ray player are upgraded to produce natural textures and depth.

Amazing picture quality when it works...
By guitarras79
I went through two players and experienced the same issue with both which was skipping and momentary freezing with loss of audio on 4k disc playback. Playing XMen Apocalypse, Avengers Endgame, Alien 40th Anniversary(HDR10+): all skipped at random places during the movie. I even made sure my discs were perfectly clean. Tested and made sure all my high speed hdmi cables were connected and working properly. When the movies played smoothly the picture looks fantastic and really pushed my Samsung q8fn to it's full potential but nothing ruins movie night worse than freezing at the most important parts of a movie. The HDR Optimizer really sets these units apart I think and works really great even on streaming content. I picked up an Xbox One X and after getting all the settings right on the tv and console I'd say the picture is about 90-95% that of the Panasonic. For the premium cost of this unit I definitely expected better performance and just couldn't tolerate the skipping and freezing. Perhaps a future firmware will address these issues but for now I'm not willing to wait to see if that happens. Unfortunately I'll be returning the second as well.

Had similar problem with Alien 40th Annivesary and Atomic Blonde. In the "old" days, you could wipe a disc through a sand pile, then pop it into your player and - no problem. Now, a little dust stops the picture or sound. There were some MINOR scratches on both discs. Rubbed (polished) each disc with a microfiber cloth and - woila - problem solved. Unlike a DVD laser, the wavelength on a 4K-capable laser is so short that it is sensitive to even minor scratches on the disc surface. Also, not all "high speed" cable are the same. May I suggest Monoprice? Its 4K cables are certified 4K. Although, I went with the 8K model. There is no 8K media yet, I know, but the cable is rated at 120Hz. Hopes this helps.

How do you set the Panasonic player remote to raise or lower the volume on your TV? There is absolutely nothing in the manual to instruct you how to do this. I have a new Sony Bravia Model:XBR48A9 Oled 4K TV.

User submitted photo
I have 2 Panasonic 820s and this 9000. Each setup, at some point, the units asked who was the cable box provider. Answered that question and the unit synced to that box. I believe the remote is actually controlling the volume of the cable box as I can separately raise and lower the volume using the Panasonic remotes or the TVs remotes. I would suggest you go back through setup and sync your cable box, if you have one. If not, I think you are probably out of luck. The 9000 remote is NOT a universal remote (programmable codes) so I doubt it will drive a Sony. Hope this helps.

PS. The "manual" that comes with the unit is worthless. Download 48-page manual at https://www.panasonic.com/content/dam/pim/au/en/DP/DP-UB9/DP-UB9000GN/DP-UB9000-User-Manual-Australia.pdf

How do you do a firmware update if this model will not work with Smartcast App? I purchased this Nov 2020 and now the unit will not work with my TV. It will still play music via BT, so I know the unit works.

The subwoofer keeps disconnecting from the soundbar intermittently for a couple seconds. How can I fix this?

Some people have gotten success by relocating the sub. Reports suggest the sub is susceptible to interference from nearby modems, cable boxes, or being too far from soundbar. My solution was to return the darn thing and purchase a LG SNR7 soundbar. Now, happy camper.

have a Vizio sound Bar Model SB3831-C6M. I would like to add two rear speakers for better sound, is that possible, cost for speakers, and how to install.

Physically, no. Acoustically, your system is engineered for 2 front speakers. Even if you could add 2 more speakers, you would just be adding 2 more front speakers at the back of the room - clashing with the front speakers. Not better sound - worse.

Can I expand the sound bar with additional lg wireless speakers….and if so, which ones

You may want to research what the numbers mean before an after the dot with regards to speaker systems. Not sure what you mean by "expand". LG offers a rear semi-wireless speaker add-on; which is a wireless receiving unit attached to two speakers by wire. More sound? Yes. But, still, a 2.1 system if, IF, if it were really a 2.1 system. In actually, it seems to be an 80W, monaural or one sound channel with a LFE channel system.

If you mean by "expand" can you add more channels to make it a 3.1 or 4.1 system - probably lot. That would depend on the electonics (best known by LG) as such that the soundbar would automatically detect and re-distribute the sound to 3 or 4 channels (left-center-right) or LR-RF-LR-RR.

My TV currently sits on a low profile (~1 inch high) stand in a cabinet. Can I set my TV directly on top of the sound bar? If not, what is the result if I mounted the sound bar directly over the TV?

My TVs are all LG with bottom-firing speakers. Measuring the distance from the bottom of the TV to the top of the soundbar equals 2". Using both TV and soundbar speakers, have encountered no undesirable listening results.

Hi, How does one correct the audio delay? If I have the TV speakers on I get an echo effect. The TV audio delay does not fix this issue. The manual for the LG unit does not show how to correct. Please advise.

You answered your own question. You are NOT getting a delay; you are getting an echo. Re-position your speakers or use only the souundbar.

Hi, I expected a bigger/louder sound from this unit. It says 300w, but I know that is not the output. I am a little disappointed that it was not louder than I expected. How can I get a louder sound? A preamp? an amplifier? please advise

You cannot get louder sound. I rate the soundbar system at 80W. One of the factors that govern high and midrange speaker output is the distance the cone can move back and forth. Another factor is the diameter of the cone. In sum, the more air a speaker can move - more sound. The soundbar dimensions afford little room for cone back and forth movement and only tiny diameter cones. Those limitations are built-in. The sub is ported reflex unit which is better at delivering lower frequencies. Here the limitation is in the size of the speaker; a 6-inch speaker simply cannot move that much air to produce a really deep base.
