Mine was defective out the box. No volume control, always at Max loud. Did everything TB recommended on their forums page (update firmware, hard resets, change settings int heir app, nothing. it's telling int he Reddit forums whenever someone mentions volume control issues (stuck on Max or Min sound), TB always has the same corporate response without offering a fix or soltuion.
Looks like there's defective batches out here and luck of the draw if you get one.

Solid desk choice. As long as you like sharp angles. Supports my ink jet, monitor, and laptop with no issues.
Only (minor) issue has been the gummy plastic bits used to hide the un-deburred sharp edges on the keyboard tray. They lose gumminess over time. carefully cut tape placed over it mitigates it, but higher quality supplied tape (or deburring the edges in the first place) would be better

Fire TV works well. Good quality video and apps selection. Only complaint is it gets a little flaky on slow connections (DSL). Works fine on a Comcast line, tends to stop working and requires reboot on Verizon DSL. Vis a vis the Chromecast that will drop video quality or increase buffering to compensate, FireTV seems to crash.

Can you hook up your hotspot from your phone and connect it to the tv?
Yes, any WiFi signal will work. But the tv and apps frequently update, so you'll burn through lots of data. I'm a cord cutter so my data usage isn't exactly comparable, but I push 40 - 50 GBs monthly to my tv for apps, updates, and watching videos.
If you're not using it to watch online videos or through an app (YouTube, sling, etc.) itll probably be fine
