Good sounding earbuds, but...

These are good headphones, but the lack of features or non-industry leading availability of features make them tough to recommend. Compared to the usual suspects:
1. Audio Quality - Hands down, this is the best feature. This bests the Sony WF-X4, Bose QC earbuds, Sennheiser Momentum TW2 by a long shot, and destroys the AirPods Pro (not their best feature). The clarity and bass are just unreal and it sounds like you have on a pair of over-the-ear headphones. Just to be clear, I am not an audiophile but these sound amazing.
2. Comfort - Different for everyone, but for my ears the B&W PI7 fit the best and are very comfortable. I cannot wear these for hours on end, but I can't wear any earbuds for hours on end. But when I have these in, I just forget about them. Of the other headphones, in order of comfort I would say Sennheiser (Best), Sony, AirPods Pro, Bose. The problems for me with the others is that, while they are also comfortable, I can expect to do a lot of adjusting while wearing unless I have 3rd tips (something I need for the Sony's).
3. Noise-Canceling - The B&W PI7's are actually pretty good, better than I thought they would be. I used these on an airplane recently with all the other ones indicated and I would order them Bose (best), Sony (very close), B&W PI7, AirPods Pro and Sennheiser. Where the B&W PI7's fall a little behind are frequencies beyond the low rumble of a jet engine. Those tend to get through. Keep in mind that the noise canceling on earbuds is only as good as the fit and tight seal you can get. So, while most say Sony's are the best, if the Bose or B&W PI's fit you bet, you may just feel they have better noise canceling.
4. Controls - This is one that the B&W PI7 just really frustrates me. You can control the music and phone calls with the earbuds. However, it is the same on both earbuds and there is no ability to adjust. You cannot control volume (the Bose and Sennheiser's can). You cannot switch to transparency mode (all the others can). You cannot adjust the level of noise canceling (the Bose and Sony's can). You can do it in the app, but how stupid is that to have to pull your phone out of your pocket, go into the app, wait for the app to connect to the headphones and then change the setting. You're pretty much stuck with having to take one bud out of your ear to have a conversation. Is that horrible? No, but for this price really? Earbuds at half the price of the B&W PI7 can do this. I really hope there is a software upgrade that addresses this. It seems like something so basic.
5. App - Sony wins this hands down for its customization and adjustability. Bose and Sennheiser are close. At least the B&W's have an app that does a few things, unlike the AirPods Pro.
6. Call Quality - the call quality is acceptable, though not great. If you accept an occasional call, you are fine. For business use on a frequent basis, I would not recommend these. I would also not recommend the Sony or Sennheiser's. You go to Bose or the AirPods Pro in that case as they are industry leading for call quality.
7. Case - wireless charging and USB-C make the case very functional. I have not used the audio retransmission feature and have really yet to figure out when I would. The case is bigger than average for 2021 earbuds, but still smaller than the Bose. I wish it was a little smaller so it fit in my pocket better.
8. Battery life - the Sony's win here. While the B&W PI7's are below average for 2021, I can typically make use of any earbud that get me 4-5 hours as I rarely have them on that long before popping back into the case. The only time when a long battery life is important is on a flight, but once I get to 3-4 hours I'm taking my over-the-ear headphones anyway so not an issue.
9. Build Quality - These win hands down. They look and feel great. They are crafted very well and feel good in your hands and in your ears. None of the others mentioned come close.
I really want to like these headphones. While the sound is great, when I put on a set of earbuds I want to have the features that are required at this price point. For the B&W PI7's, the app is below average, the call quality is below average, the on-board controls are below average, and the case size is below average (or above average in size as the case may be). Noise canceling is a little above average. Sound quality is industry leading. Build quality is excellent. So basically, you just have to decide if the build quality and sound quality is worth the price. If that is most important, then definitely get these. If not, you should consider the others mentioned.

Awesome headphones, for some...

Setting noise canceling aside for a moment, these headphones may be the best true wireless ones out there. They beat the AirPods Pro and Bose QC earbuds in pretty much every category except for call quality. They sound awesome, the app functionality is great, speak-to-chat really works for those that use it, and the ambient sound adjustability and adaptive sound control work just the way I want. The case size reduction is also a big plus, close to the AirPods Pro, but way ahead of the Bose. The AirPods Pro still win on call quality, followed closely by the Bose QC. The WF-1000XM4, while much better than the XM3, still do not compare to the other two for this feature so look elsewhere if call quality is important to you (i.e. business use).
But then there is noise-canceling, which may be the reason most buy these earbuds. No matter what these companies do, so much of the noise-canceling success, or failure, actually falls on how well the consumer can get these things to fit and get a seal. Meaning, if you cannot create a good seal, no matter how good someone says the noise canceling is, you will not get the same result. That means that for me, while the XM4's are great noise-canceling earbuds, the Bose QC is actually better. No matter how much I squish and twist and adjust, I just cannot get the same seal with the XM4 foam tips as I can the Bose QC. I am not even talking comfort, as they both are comfortable to me, as are the AirPods Pro. In fact, while the Bose are best to me, the AirPods Pro achieve about the same noise canceling quality as the XM4 without all the squishing, twisting and adjustment. I can just pop them in and go (as I can with the Bose). This is likely due to the silicone tips on those two that for me create a better seal than foam (I must just have weird ears).
So in the end, these are awesome earbuds and definitely worth the purchase for most people. However, you may get different results with your ears so you may need to test drive and decide for yourself. They are still worth 5-stars in my opinion for all the great features, just know the challenges you may (or may not) have with the noise canceling.

These are my go to headphones for work. The noise canceling is excellent, close to the Sony XM4's. The call quality is awesome and much better than the Sony XM4's. To me, they are more comfortable than the Sony XM4's, but not by much. The ear cups feel a little deeper which fits my ears better. I do prefer the sound quality on the Sony's more than the Bose, but the Bose sound signature is not bad (just not my preferred). Sony wins with options and adjustments with the app. Still, I find myself using these all the time for work.

Very good headphones with battery issue...

For Apple's first attempt at over-ear headphones, these are a pretty good set of headphones. I want them to be great headphones, especially being in the Apple ecosystem. I do like them, but they need to figure out the battery issue. Noise-canceling is awesome. Transparency mode is awesome. I do wish there was some adjustable settings in-between those two but for now it is all or nothing. These things are heavy compared to most other headphones, but they are comfortable on the ears and the headband (goofy as it looks) is comfortable as well. The phone call quality is excellent. The audio quality is pretty good as well (not an audiophile, but sounded good to my ears). The build quality is nothing short of spectacular.
Unfortunately, the battery issue is real. I cannot understand not having an on/off button, but I could accept that if the headphones properly conserved power, which they do not. When I don't put them in the case, they will lose 10-12% per night (about 14 hours from the time I stop work until I start again in the morning). When I put them in the horribly designed, handbag case it is even worse. I lose 20-30% per night in something that is supposed to conserve power immediately. For now, I have just taught myself that these are a device that needs to be charged every night, just like my iPhone and Apple Watch. It should not be like this. Either Apple needs to fix the power conservation mode or allow for one of the buttons to turn them on and off. Here's hoping to a software fix soon.
Other than that one, major issue, these headphones are near the top-of-class in everything else. Unfortunately, for a lot of people the battery issue will be a non-starter. You will need to decide for yourself if that is the case based on your use and needs.

Best noise-canceling headphones...

There are a lot of reviews out there on these headphones, so I won't go through everything. Bottom line - if you want the best noise canceling at a reasonable price, get these. They go on-sale a lot, so wait if you can. Other than that, it does a lot of things average to above-average, but not necessarily great. Audio is fine, but there are better sounding headphones out there. The app works pretty well and gives you a great deal of customization. Speak-to-chat is a nice feature, but one I think I will rarely use (triggers to easily). The ambient sound control is a good mode, but not as good as a true transparency mode. Adaptive sound control is a nice feature, but I just tend to disable it. The build quality is all plastic, but does not feel cheap. You can get better build quality in other headphones for a premium. The call quality is just ok. It is a step above the XM3's, but still well below a number of other headphones.
So, as I said at the beginning, if you want industry-leading noise canceling and a lot of other features done well (but not the best), you should get these. For most people, these headphones will do all they need, and more, so I do recommend them.

Noise canceling is nothing short of spectacular...

First things first. If they do not fit or are not comfortable, do not bother with the earbuds, no matter which ones you are considering. If you are constantly fidgeting with them, adjusting them, or taking them out because they hurt your ears you will, inevitably, stop wearing them. Moving on...
I have had the AirPods Pro since they came out, which do a number of things pretty well. They are great for voice calls, noise-canceling is good, comfort is good and sound quality is good (very subjective, I know). They also have a very small form factor (both in ear and the case). I tried the Jabra Elite 85t bud could not get them to stay in one of my ears. Adhering to my first comment, they went back and I did not consider any further. I have the Sennheiser MTW2. They have a great fit (to me), the noise-canceling is decent, and the sound is nothing short of phenomenal. The phone call quality is pretty good as well. They are slightly larger than the AirPods Pro, both in ear and case, but are manageable. The Bose Quietcomfort Earbuds are in a strange spot for me. Audio quality is a little better than the AirPods Pro, but not as good as the MTW2. They are the least comfortable to me, but not totally uncomfortable, meaning I never forget they are there, but they do not hurt or bother me at all. For phone calls they are on par with the AirPods Pro, and only slightly better than the MTW2. They are the largest, both in ear and the case, and by a wide margin. Where they win is noise-canceling. The noise-canceling, which is probably why they are so large, blocks out almost everything. The only thing I haven't used them on is a plane, but based on experience with what they do in my other uses, I expect they will be just fine.
Having said all of that, after following my first comment, my suggestion is this. If you want earbuds that are the best all-rounders, get the AirPods Pro (assuming you live in an Apple ecosystem). If you want the best noise-canceling, get the Bose Quietcomfort Earbuds (these will give the NC 700's a run for their money, though obviously short on other features when compared to them). If you want the best sound quality, get the MTW2.
