Perfect for wildlife, sports, travel and more, the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is a compact, lightweight telephoto lens for EOS R Series cameras, offering a versatile zoom range that brings subjects closer with ease. The RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM is similar in size to the EF 70-300mm F4.5-5.6 IS II USM lens, and not only reaches to 400mm, but also has fast Nano USM focusing and up to 6 stops of Coordinated IS when used in combination with an EOS R series camera featuring In-body Image Stabilization, like the EOS R5 and EOS R6, or 5.5 stops with an EOS R/RP camera. Using a single Ultra Low Dispersion lens element towards the front of the lens group corrects chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range, making your images look crisp and colorful with minimal color blur. The RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens can also accept both the RF1.4x and RF2x tele extenders giving you the effective maximum focal length of 560mm and 800mm respectively. With a control ring that allows for quick setting changes, including shutter speed and aperture, the RF100-400mm F5.6-8 IS USM lens puts quality, convenience and control in your hands.

The Little Tele-Zoom That Could
on February 7, 2024
Posted by: Tech0
Verified Purchase:Yes
I've owned this lens for over a year now which has given me plenty of time to assess it. I also own the much more expensive RF 100-500. It may seem odd to own, but I think not because the 100-500, while "light and compact" for it's range, becomes heavy with long hikes, which is why I bought the 100-400.
The build quality of the 100-400 is what one would expect of a lens at this level. It's a hunk of plastic with minimal weather sealing. Image quality though isn't hugely that different from the 100-500 though. It's a tad less sharp and crisp -- nothing that can't be fixed when editing if that is part of your workflow. And autofocus is quite responsive thanks to it having a USM motor.
What I don't like about the lens is the same thing I don't like about any non-L RF lens - there is no separate manual focus ring. Instead the control ring doubles as manual focus too and you have to pick one via the camera's menu or on bodies like the R7 the MF/AF switch on the front of the camera.
I've used the lens on both the R5 and R7 and while it's good on the R5 I think it's best paired with crop sensor bodies like the R7 because of the 1.6x crop multiplier giving this lens and effective reach of 640mm.
So who is this lens for? Two groups, I think. 1) anyone who doesn't want to spend a fortune on a tele-zoom but also doesn't want to sacrifice image quality or consider used lenses. 2) People who want to compliment their higher-end tele-zoom with a lighter, more compact model more appropriate for long hikes or places where a bigger lens would be uncomfortable, awkward or not allowed.

It's A Souped up Apple Watch 8.
on February 25, 2023

Big AW fan, owned the original and Series 3-6. Currently use the AW7. Bought the Ultra because I thought it was very different. It's not. This is the Wizard of Oz of Apple Watches: big intimidating voice but just a little man behind the curtain. The reality is the Ultra is just a bigger form factor AW plus the ability to go diving or on a longer hike or trek -- though it only has days, not weeks of battery life like other hiking watches.
The Ultra is indeed impressive and slick looking. If that's all you are looking for, and the price point is no issue, then the Ultra is for you. That's likely who is buying them because functionally it's not that unique enough from its little brother AW8 or even AW7.
The separation the Ultra has from the hundreds lower priced AW8 45mm sport models focuses more on usability than extra abilities: 1) cellular is standard, 2) screen is slightly bigger and better quality, 3) there is a user-configurable side button, 4) 2x battery life compared to the AW8.
As far as distinct capabilities, the Ultra only has three: 1) as a dive watch, 2) can tolerate extreme temperatures, 3) has an emergence siren for, say, a search team, to locate you. The GPS is also improved over the AW8. If any of this is useful to you then its worth a look, though I think other brands like Garmin do the job here better at this point in the Ultra's life. Garmin has been making extreme sport watches for over a decade. They are not the prettiest but they are solid tools.
I returned my Ultra - briefly here's why: 1) it's enormous. If you don't have a big wrist it looks silly. 2) it's expensive for a gadget that will be technologically leapfrogged, probably by Apple itself, in a very short time -- it's not a long term "investment." 3) It doesn't do anything extra over an AW8 that I want a sport watch to do (Running is my sport), so why spend the extra money?
The Ultra is a solid watch but if you are expecting it to do a lot more than a regular AW 8 you will be disappointed. Apple has a lot more work to do before Ultra catches up with the functionality of true ultra sport watches. If you just want a bigger face or different look for your AW though and don't mind the price then go for it.

Fun, challenging set of mini games
on January 7, 2022
Posted by: Tech0
Verified Purchase:Yes
As an adult I find it a fun assortment of "cerebral" mini games that ranging in difficulty from easy to "oof I'm old." But there is good news - research shows these kind of games can help keep your brain sharp or remove a few cobwebs. You can play solo... or up to 4 players to finally settle who the "real" genius in your group is.
I think this is more of an adult game than a kids game if only because most kids don't really find things like math, memory skills, analyzing skills as "fun" activities when not in school or doing homework. I know I didn't.
For the undecided there is a short, but free, demo available for download on the Nintendo eShop store on the Switch so you can try a couple of the games to decide if it's for you. I wish more games offered this.

Expensive Shovelware.

This game isn’t worth $5. There is zero strategy involved in any of the games, even for a 3 year old. The games are tedious and repetitive. Even worse only a few games are unlocked when you first play.
To unlock the others you have to grind through the locked one to earn “tickets”. If these were levels like in a game that works but these are mini games. When is the last time you went to a carnival and you couldn’t play the milk jug toss until you played slot car racing?

Not even par. Bogey.

The concept is great, especially for the vacant sports genre for Switch. The basic premise as a budding PGA pro is initially enjoyable- customize your player, and as the game progresses, clothes, clubs, even sponsors. The game play is what one would expect from a realistic golf game - until it gets annoying with random highlight cut ins of the other players (even when playing alone).
The announcers play calling is also fun at first but after a couple tournaments it’s just tedious and predictable as a song on an endless loop.
The backbreaker here is that the game requires the player to log in every time, not just one and done as is the norm with other Switch games.
On sale the game is tolerable for a quick round but in no way is it worth full MSRP.

A worthy update to previous models
on November 6, 2021
Posted by: Tech0
Verified Purchase:Yes
For those who wished for an AirPod Pro style model that didn't penetrate the ear canal, the AirPod 3 is for you.
This model, like, previous ones sits in the ear and does not press into the ear canal. However, the tips of the AirPod Pros are a tad bigger than the previous models. When I first saw them I feared they would be too big but they are actually feel more satisfying and less like they will fall out during exercise -- though my AirPod 1 or 2 never did.
Unlike previous Airpod models, these are advertised as sweat and water resistant, so they are presumably made for use while exercising. Because they are an open design, when you run with them in you won't hear the "thumping" you get with closed buds like the AirPod Pro. And while they are a closed design, they sound amazing even on the street, especially with Spatial Audio enabled.
Even if you are still rocking your 1 or 2s these are a worthy upgrade for not only the sound and water resistance improvement but also the sleeker design with the shorter stems that make the wearer look slightly less like an alien.
These are best for people who find AirPod Pros uncomfortable or use them while exercising, especially pounding pavement. They are less than ideal for use in noisy locations like an airplane cabin. If you do all of these things then you might want to have a pair of each -- a tool for each specific task. Unfortunately, the design of each model means neither can be a single tool to rule them all.

Nice but not essential upgrade
on November 6, 2021
Posted by: Tech0
Verified Purchase:Yes
Decent upgrade, but not "life changing." Worth the extra $50 for users that play mostly handheld AND can appreciate the improved screen. That said the resolution is still 720p so, while the screen is bigger, brighter, more clear, it is not higher resolution.
Aside from the improved screen, the OLED model offers a more stable kickstand and double the internal memory. However, 64GB still isn't enough over time. You will still need an SD card to store games if you buy games from the eShop. If you only buy game cartridges 64GB should be plenty.
The other central "guts" of the system are also the same as the previous models so if you mostly play docked then skip this version as you will experience no improvement whatsoever. The dock included with the OLED model features a LAN port to wire directly to a modem or router, if desired. That is the only material hardware difference between the two docks.
If you are considering a Switch for a younger child save the $50 and get the regular version instead since they are unlikely to recognize the difference between an LED and OLED screen or the smaller bezel. For $50, they'd probably enjoy an extra game instead.

You have a great camera. Why by cheap-o batteries?
on October 6, 2021

Yes, these are expensive batteries but so was the R6 or R5 you are using it with. Especially in the case of the R5 these batteries are essential to get 20 fps. Don't trust knock-offs. They'll let you down every time, dying a sudden death right when that bald eagle scoops up a fish in front of you. D'oh!

Is this Mint fresh? This SIM Kit will let you know

Great way to test Mint in your area. Card cost $2 but they give you a $5 credit toward your first month if you stick with them. You get a temp number for the trial and then if you stay with them you can port-in your own number or they'll supply you with a new one.
They use the T-mobile network and I did get 5G service -- though it wasn't much faster than good LTE -- about 150 Mbps. The downside to Mint is that you have to commit for a min of 3 mos. at a time.
