Do I need a cable provider such as spectrum or direct TV to watch regular local channels?

No, but it depends on what market you live in. If you live in a larger TV market, you can usually stream your local channels. As long as you have internet and are connected to a smart tv, you should be able to stream you local channels. There are other streaming options like Hulu LiveTV, FuboTV, Sling, Playstation Vue etc. Depending where you purchased your tv, the customer service support should be able to provide you with the options on how to view your local affiliates.
