Good but fragile

This works very well, but unfortunately doesn't last very long. Both my wife and I bought one of these when we purchase our computers, and the first of the two only lasted several months before it ceased working. The second one lasted about double that, but it, too, gave up the ghost.
I don't understand why; there was only moderate use.
