I remember loving Abbott & Costello movies as a kid, and Jack and the Beanstalk, as silly and amateurish as it is, was still a real delight, especially in brilliant Technicolor. Having this 70th Anniversary edition restored to its original imagery remains a delight, even though I now realize it is rather amateurish, but it's Abbott & Costello!!!!!

Considering the film dates back to the 1930's, I was not surprised that the acting was too overt, as would be if it were a silent film. Fredric March's performance may have been Oscar-worthy, but in comparison to Spencer Tracy in the same role in the 1940's, this is a better film, even with Ingrid Bergman and Lana Turner in their roles. I suggest seeing both films and judging your own opinion in the comparison. Mr. Hyde looks like a monster, not a madman??? Silly makeup. Why any woman would have a relationship with him...forced or otherwise???

Considering the caliber of actors in this film, I expected a better movie. I feel Hepburn was effective, but it wasn't necessarily a role personified to her as an actress. Yes, she played a plan Jane, but that's about it. Lancaster was effective, and I think Bridges was good. It is a good film, but not of the genre I would label classic/msterpiece.

Arsenic and Old Lace is a ridiculously funny comedy classic. I've seen the play and enjoyed it very much, but Cary Grant is perfectly cast for this film. Casting was great, including the original stage actresses playing the old aunt murderesses. Worth every penny and/or dollar to add to your classic movie collection. Criterion insures the lasting edition for future viewing.
