Talk about stunning Technicolor. This enduring 1948 classic is by far and wide the most beautiful motion picture ever put on celluloid. This Criterion edition, now in 4K Ultra HD is even more brilliant. Besides awesome color, this is also the finest movie about ballet, not only a romantic drama, but an unforgettable portrayal of the art form starring some of the world's greatest ballet dancers of the era. Criterion has presented over 1000 great movies, but The Red Shoes is one of its greatest reminders of film as an authentic masterpiece.

Although John Candy's performance is the best of any movie he's been in, the overall comedy is hard to endure. It's an average comedy and seeing Steve Martin as the straight guy doesn't cut it. I was fortunate to see the New York Broadway play sitting center front row. The plays intimacy and remarkable performances left a lasting impression on me. Like the film, I was puzzled by the fact that one man never knew his lover was a man until he was physically shown frontally. This film is beautiful, but lacks the intewnsity of the play. It is nonetheless breathtakingly personal.
