Love Among The Ruins is an Unforgettable Delight!
on April 25, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
With a screenplay by three-time Emmy winner, James Costigan, filled with poignant dialogue, brilliantly performed by stage and screen legends, Katherine Hepburn and Laurence Olivier, Love Among The Ruins is a thrilling tour de force. There is no denying that the talents of the two Oscar-winning stars were at the top of their gain. There one-time collaboration is fully realized, and my only disappointment is that it was only one time, but even though, what we have is an unforgettable period masterpiece executed by three giants of cinema: Hepburn, Olivier and multi-Academy Award Director, the legendary George Cukor. No film collection should be without owning this extraordinary romantic comedy.

DEATH TAKES ANOTHER HOLIDAY
on April 21, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
A loose adaptation of its original, Death Takes A Holiday, Meet Joe Black is a wondrous full-color retelling of its memorable black and white predecessor.
Ably cast with the brilliant Anthony Hopkins, and in a surprisingly delightful performance by Brad Pitt, as a very handsome portrayal of death, we are treated to a retelling of this romantic fairy tale, and as with all fairy tales, we can imagine in ways uncommon, especially when one thinks about accepting "death" as reality.
Meet Joe Black may not necessarily be a film for everyone, but during these times of stay-home-seclusion, it is a classic bit of romance and fantasy entertainment via the silver screen.

SONG OF NORWAY: REMEMBERING THE JOY OF OPERETTA
on April 21, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
SONG OF NORWAY reminds of way-back-when operettas. The plots are almost always trite, but the music was always wonderful. The film adaptation of this hit operetta celebrates the early career of Norway's greatest classical composer, Edvard Grieg, his struggles, his frustrations, along with an affair, loss of his best friend, but in the end, a happy ending.
With stunning color cinematography of actual Norway, laced with songs adapted from Grieg's musical compositions, we have songs that highlight the action and storyline. With Florence Henderson and Frank Porreta singing the majority of the operetta's songs, we are swept away with magnificent vocal artistry.
The plot may not be necessarily accurate, and we must excuse that, but with Grieg's lush music, glorious vocals and wondrous cinematography, we are reminded of the joy of operetta and the delight of a happy, happy ending to boot!

I LOVE MY LG COMPACT MICROWAVE OVEN
on April 10, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
Not only is my LG - NeoChef 0.9 Cu. Ft. Compact Microwave Oven simple to operate, its stainless steel look is definitely fashion statement in my kitchen. Inside and out, the oven looks classy.
The directions for use are written instructions a child can understand and once I grew accustomed to its operation, I am sorry I didn't replace my former microwave until now.
It's compact size fit easily on my utility counter top with room to spare. The oven exterior and interior are easy to clean and wipe spotless. It's also quiet-operating and when cooking or defrosting is finished, the friendly signal is so far better than hearing a loud buzz. The interior size is just right almost anything you need to defrost, reheat or cook.
The purchase price won't destroy your pocketbook too.
What's not to love my LG Compact Stainless Steel Microwave Oven?

GODSPELL Finally in Blu Ray
on March 27, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
Godspell has and will always remain a musical favorite from the very first time it appeared on stage. Stephen Swartz has gone to write several memorable musicals: Pippin, The Magic Show, and of course, Wicked, but Godspell was his first, and remains a heartfelt musical that has enchanted audiences around the world.
Godspell was his first, and throughout its history, remains one of his most performed musicals, and of course, its is only second to Wicked, which is still playing successfully on Broadway and everywhere else imaginable. We must also not forget Swartz' Pippin, brought to Broadway by Bob Fosse in one of the most creative Broadway musical masterpieces of all time.
Written originally while Swartz was still a college student, this musical is choked full of wonderfully tuneful songs, Day By Day being the show's greatest musical number.
This wonderful film permanently amplifie its original intimate stage setting by expanding its charm by being presented in and about New York City.
The film musical uses NYC as its centerpiece, and it becomes a glorious celebration throughout the greatest entertainment capital in America, be it Lincoln Center, or the Statue of Liberty and the long gone World Trade Center Towers as backdrops, to name only a few of New York City spectacular locations.
Delightfully performed by a brilliant cast led by a young Victor Garber, as Jesus Christ, with memorable songs and brilliant color cinematopgraphy, though dated, yet timeless throughout.
Now in Blu Ray, this musical masterpiece will be forever showcased in high definition.
Godspell, past, now and always will remain a masterpiece of musical wonderment.

BAMBOOZLED IS BLACK HISTORY EXTRAORDINAIRE
on March 27, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
Spike Lee's fascinating film is an extraordinary lesson in a film presentation of the black history entertainment world as told by today's greatest Black American cinema director.
At times a disturbing look at an entertainment that emphatically perpetuated the stereotype of black entertainers by putting them in blackface, but told in a brilliant piece of cinema that is a masterpiece of great film artistry at its best.
This expose' is pure entertainment, yet demoralizing in its content about black entertainers. Spike Lee tells ai n in-your-face factual story of the era of minstrel shows that places at its core white America's racism and race prejudice, that, in its glory, creates the image of black people as a lower form of life, lending further bias to a personification at the time that black people were inferior human beings in all aspects to whites people.
Thank you, Spike Lee and Criterion, for preserving a film masterpiece of the shameful past of racism in the American entertainment world. Let it never be forgotten that minstrel shows and minstrel show history is stained and racist and will always be painfully remembered in the annuls of humankind.

The Ten Commandments 1923/1956: A DeMille Triumph!
on March 13, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
Cecil B. DeMille's triumphant 1956 film masterpiece with a cast of thousands, gloriously scenic, with a great musical score and memorable performances, The 1956 Ten Commandments belongs in every DVD collection as an example of masterful begone film-making that is as historic as the story it embodies. Pairing this Technicolor marvel with DeMille's 1923 black and white silent film of The Ten Commandments, uniquely grandiose for its time, yet disappointing, in that it switches from the biblical take to a modern time portrayal of religious doubt and devotional fervor, is still a look at where movie-making has come from its beginnings to the era of color epics in the 1950's, before digital motion pictures, over the top special effects et al. These two examples of cinema masterpieces belong in every library as a memory of what was grand cinema by one of the industries greatest directors.

The Madwoman of Chaillot is Modestly Charming
on March 13, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
A wonderful, yet unbelievable, take of prejudice, the strength of the human spirit, and all in a setting of a begone time in Paris, Katharine Hepburn is a lovely portrayal of a woman lost in her own world of the imagined, with friends and those who admire her spirit, all performed with charm from an incredible cast of great actors. This is a fairy tale, filled with innocence and heroic misdemeanor. Beautifully filmed, lovely costuming, breathtaking cinematography and standout performances by Yul Brynner and Danny Thomas, and a role only Katharine Hepburn can portray with the delicacy of a lady, but with the strength and fiery determination of a ferocious mother lion.

A Little Romance Glows With Charm
on March 13, 2020

A wonderful film about first love, told from the perspective of youth. Laurence Olivier, in the winter of his years, in a marvelous performance filled with a performance that is honest and filled with the warmth that only an actor of Olivier's stature can exude. Played with the fairy tale innocence of youth, the frail love of a spoiled actress mother, but a strong, yet understanding love of a stepfather, this lovely story of first love will charm and remain in one's heart forever.

THE BEST INTENTIONS IS IMPRESSIVE
on March 13, 2020
Posted by: Sophie118
Verified Purchase:Yes
Penned by Ingmar Bergman, The Best Intentions is not only a heartwarming story about his parents, but a honest account of his greater family, with its strengths, flaws, biases and detailed portrayals. Beautifully performed by a brilliant cast, Bergman shares his recollections of family and of his parents with earnest honesty. At times are kind recollections, and at other times, painful recollections of his grandparents, their prejudices and at times hurtful actions. In all of this, Bergman maintains his honest portrayal of his parents and family with warmth, sometimes unsettling, but always wiuth respect and love.
