It may not be historically accurate, nor is another boring piece of old cinema, but it's another over the top Cecil B. DeMille film epic. THE CRUSADES utilizes a cast of thousands during a time when modern technology wasn't available to any director, even in his wildest dreams. Add to the mix dramatic romance with Loretta Young in a love with Richard the Lionhearted, Henry Wilcoxon. If it weren't 1935, this would have been in Technicolor. Never mind, it's not his best, but it's still another glorious Cecil B. DeMille epic.

Add Sigmund Freud to the mix, and you have the epitome of cleverly involved excellence. Add a brilliant screenplay by Nicholas Meyer, and a bevy of brilliants actors: Laurence Olivier, Vanessa Redgrave, Robert Duvall, Alan Arkin and Nicol Williamson as the ever brilliant Holmes, and you have ultra movie magic. Solving another crime is ever so much fun!

Both unique, yet avant garde films in this set will most likely nit be to everyone's liking. India Son has no dialogue at all and Baster has dialogue but a nerve-wracking music score. Marguerite Duras is a master author and storyteller, but as a film director, she tells stories that are hard to understand. The music she includes can be testing, and her directing technique is not most filmgoers cup of tea. Criterion selections are masterful, but sometimes way too different.
