Ultimately you do need to upgrade and it will 2+ years to equal the home and student version using this single PC version which will get upgraded automatically during the course of the year.

I can only assume they ran out or didn't have enough to keep selling at the Black Friday price. Wasn't a bad value at the higher price but I might have thought twice and looked further.
