I bought this for a couple of reasons- mainly because it's dirt cheap, but also has the ability to act as a wireless access point using a wired connection. So far signal strength has been excellent, and I've had no issues to date. In my case, my house is wired with cat5 to each room, but because the house is an L shape, part of the basement had a wifi dead spot. Since everything nowadays is wireless, having a deadzone in my daughters room was an issue. Using this as a wired wireless access point has saved the day. I'm able to get the same download speeds off of this device as I get off of the main router when I'm connected.
Now, this isn't the latest, greatest bleeding edge tech, but it's been reliable and cost effective for me. So far it has easily supported 8 heavy use devices simultaneously without any issues. Note that I'm using this as a _wired_ wireless access point, which is slightly different than most people's intended use of this
I would recommend this to a friend!

I'm looking for something to use near our security dvr - so that I can connect an ethernet cable from the dvr to the extender (our router is at the other end of the house), would this work if I plugged it in near the dvr and connected the ethernet?

Yes, this will do that.

I have a room that is detached from my house the wireless is weak but we have run an Ethernet cable . The cable is fine for computer, game console but not for a tablet. can we plug the enternet into this device to boost the wifi in the room?

Yes, you can use this as a wired, wireless access point. Setup is simple , just read the instructions for setting up an access point toward the back of the instructions
