Installed it in the home to address the problem of not getting a good signal on the patio. It works better than without but still have dropouts even inside the home.

Will this adapter allow a usb external hard drive to be network accessible?

It needs to be connected to the router but it will be slow because it is a bottleneck on the network, since it is USB, It runs slower than the network and the router can only 'talk' at the speed of the adapter

extending wifi signal with a wired ethernet connection

I have a wired (ethernet) outlet in the room from where I want to extend the wifi signal since I have a very large home and backyard. My set-up includes a Netgear Router 1900 nighthak that is connected to the modem creating the wifi. In the room where I have the wired ethernet port I have my old netgear 600 router acting as a repeater. The signal is OK but not great. I wonder if the signal would be better if I replace the netgear 600 router that is acting as a repeater with a Netgear AC1200 extender connecting it via the same ethernet wired port.

my experience with the AC 1200 sways you can expect a marginal improvement. It still will drop out sometimes

Does the device work via battery power?

How long does the battery last? I'd like to be able to use this on road trips. Will I need to have it plugged in for it to work. Where would I find a car charger?
No battery power or car charger for this unit. Suggest a voltage inverter that converts 12vdc to 120vac (price varies depending on the wattage output..it only needs a little wattage , check the power wall wart for the needs). It will only work when it has power

Is there a password protection?

Can you set up a password to protect the content on the hard drive? Because I will be going to college soon and many people around me could potentially gain access to it if it is not protected.

Does this device handle automatic backups?

I have a Macbook Air with wifi home network.
(1) Can this Seagate external drive be set up to do automatic scheduled backups (for example, every night at 2:00 am)?
(2) And, will it only backup files that have changed since the last backup?
(3) And, do I need to select which files, programs, photos, etc that I want backed up?
(4) And, what if I create a new file or folder on my Macbook Air? Do I then have to select it as one of the files, folders, etc that I want the Seagate to backup automatically in the future?
1..Yes
2..The MAC backup uses a "changed-since-last-looked" method by default (it saves time and disk space)
3..You can -- I would not suggest any limitations. It does not save that much time or disk space since it only logs changes
4..Mac finds a new file/folder and it adds it to the list without any prodding from the user. No message that it did so--it just takes care of it
