What's great about it: Slim line with good sound
What's not so great: Mounting bracket needs a little more clearance
We already had one pair to replace some black bose 101,s. We moved up to a 7.1 surround system and these blend better with the ceiling. The sound for the size is typical Bose ..sounds very good for surround speakers... I wish there was a little more clearance between the ceiling and the speaker so the tilt could have reached the next slot on the bracket. But that is minor.
This product has... Right size for my space, Easy to set up, Good build quality
About me... Tech savvy
I would recommend this to a friend!

What's great about it: little worry
What's not so great: time waiting
for larger devices it is better, easier , and much better job done to let Best Buy apply you screen savor. I have tried the free ones that come with the cases and they just dont work well or apply well on larger devices. A cell phone..do it your self. but something important like a full size ipad or ever a mini. Bite the bullet and get it done right. It will last longer and work better

what is the largest gauge of speaker wire that can be used with the unit?

I used 14 gauge with no problems. 12 would be nice if you have really long distances but you probably would need some amplification which this does not have

Can these speakers be used with a laptop

I dont see why not. They are the same as any stereo speakers that you would buy. They are small so should draw alot of power. I would check the computer specs. I think the minimum wattage is 10. To me what makes a good sound system for any computer is a decent subwoofer. I would consider the price of these to a system more designed for your needs if it is video, music or gaming. All Bose products are the same price so if you went to a place like Best Buy you could compare the computer sound systems and the stereo speaker systems in on place

Power and Impedence

I have an onkyo HT-S8400 home theater system with a 5.1 set-up instead of a full 7.1 that its capable of. The receiver has a 130watt per channel output with 6-16 ohm impedance.

I want to replace the original onkyo speakers with new Bose component speakers. I want to purchase the Bose 161 speakers that are rated at 10-100 watts per channel for the surround L/R with 4-8 ohm impedance. For the front L/R speakers I want to buy the Bose 301 speakers rated at 10-150 watts with 4-8 ohms per channel. I will keep the onkyo subwoffer (own power supply) and the onkyo center channel (no bose alternative). BTW the original onkyo speakers were all 6 ohm and 130 watts.

My main concern is that the 161 and 301 Bose speakers have a 4-8 ohm rating, does this mean that these speakers will sometimes demand 4 ohms or will they work with the 6-16ohm receiver? Do I run the risk of frying my receiver? The other concern is that the the 161 has a 10-100 watts while the receiver throws 130, can this damage the speakers at high volume? The 301 has 150 watts but the receiver again is only 130watts, does this means I can't use the 301 to their full potential? I am thinking these values are RMS anyway but it doesn't hurt to ask.

Also I run 12 gauge wire for all my speakers since wires are 20-30 feet, but I don't think this will fit into the 161 or 301 speaker rear ports. Please let me know if these bose speakers will be a safe purchase with this receiver.

My others worry is that since the 301s are reflexcing speakers with a purpose to fill the room with stereo sound, will this be detrimental to a HT set-up as it will make the sound ubiquitous rather than seem as if the sound is coming from the right or the left respective to the onscreen performance?

One has to place the 301s at least a foot off the wall perpendicular to them to allow the reflexing technology to work, but what is the best distance? I think I will have to measure the trajectory of the 301 rear speaker sound wave (based on the principle: angle of incidence is equal to angle reflection) and trace the wave to see where is lands on the listening area.

Also, the bose floor stands for the 301, will they hide the 12 gauge wire in the shaft? In addition, will the floor stands, with a fixed height of 2 feet, be high enough for optimal listening (Our sofas place our ears at approx 30-36 inches). Based on the 30-36 inches, at what height should I mount the 161 to be used as L/R surround speakers (the room is a perfect rectangle with a horizontal listening area of 30-36 inches in height). Also, what angle below the horizontal should I lower the 161 to face the listening area?

Thank you for your time and expertise,
Singh
Ps. 12 gauge will work just have to really crimp the ends of the wire. And if you don't get all the wire in that is fine as long as they don't cross the terminals

Some thoughts. The 161,s are sold as a pair. Some places list the price individually but you have to by a pair. You have a lot of good concerns. Most good surround receivers will adjust the ohms to the speaker. If you use 4 and 8 ohm speakers the 4 ohm may sound a little louder but you should be able to adjust that with the receiver controls. The 301 are basically book shelf speakers not surround speakers and are limited where you can use them. The 161's can be placed on the wall or ceiling. They are much smaller and blend in with the environment better. The sound is good but fidelity is not what you use surround sound speakers for. They are for ambient sound. So you just want good sound. I would doubt you will ever exceed the power capacity unless your room is over 20' x 20'. You are looking for effect with surround systems not brut force. You want the brut force in your subwoofer so the ground will shake. As long as you don't exceed the power rating by more than 50 percent you probably won't blow them. But you can always put in an inline fuse if you are worried. Plus check to see if your power output is total or per channel or peak output. I have a Yamaha with 110 wats per channel times 9. And have had no problems with bose am7 in the front and a shielded front bose 101 style speaker ( thought they still made that) a klipsh 12 " powered subwoofer and 4 161's for surround and back speakers and no problems. Sounds pretty good for our 24' x 20" family room.
