I use this lens on both a Canon 7D Mark II as well as 5D Mark III, and this lens works superbly with both. Have captured extremely sharp images of birds (in flight and fixed) with nice color contrast even at long end on the 7D, which equates to 640X. AF is quick and silent. Excellent L glass; you honestly won't be disappointed.

What's great about it: Value for the price, nice zoom range, light, solid images
What's not so great: build quality so-so, typical slow zoom apertures
Great value as a kit lens for full frame cameras like D600/D610, with very useful zoom range as walkabout, general use lens and quite decent image quality. Not in the realm of a 24-70, of course, and you shouldn't expect that at 30% of the price. Also relatively slow at apertures available, so stick to strong lighting. Light, which is good... but feels not terribly robust, which is less good. Mine worked fine in moderate usage. Probably nicely useful on crop (DX) cameras with 36-130 equivalent zoom, but I haven't personally tried that.

What's not so great: Build robustness nice for price, but obviously below f1.4
The nifty fifty is an essential tool for every DSLR photographer, with excellent image quality and fast speed at an extraordinary price. Some may go for it's more expensive sibling the f1.4, but for most folks this lens will more than fit the bill.

Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D40 camera?
Yes... will work fine, providing 75mm equivalent field of view on your camera, in that it is a "crop" (DX format) camera. That's a near ideal range for portraits, as is the f1.8 aperture. To go a bit wider and to get to the true 50mm view on your D40, pick up a 35mm f1.8 Nikon lens also. Inexpensive at $200, and nice image quality.

1 or 5 years warranty?
Nikon AF-S 50mm FX, the warranty at beat buy specified for 1 year limited, however, it's 5 years for all other nikon-dealer. Is the free extend also applied on Best Buy lens or not?
A US lens purchased from Best Buy will have the same warranty option as with any other authorized dealer... just make sure that it's the f1.8 that has the extended warranty, and not just the more expensive f1.4. Frankly, with a combination of Nikon's lens quality and the very low cost of this lens, you can't go wrong. Just don't buy a "grey market" import lens without a US warranty, as Nikon will not service such hardware.
