The band works great. The only negatives for me is the IOS app. You cannot choose which notifications to receive (you can on the Android App). Also, it doesn't seem to recognize iMessages, but normal MMS it does.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Does it sync with note 5 and can it receive text and calls

Yes, there is an android app called "Connect" by Garmin (it's better than the IOS one). It receives txt messages and notifies of incoming calls. It does not receive calls though.

does the Vivosmart have a gps to measure distance traveled?
No, but you can set custom stride lengths for walking and running to increase accuracy.

Does the vivosmart have back lighting so you can view the display at night? If not - - which Garmin unit has this feature?
Yes. It is oled. The brightness is adjustable and easy to read at night. Not as well in direct sunlight.
