I always knew Bose was a good product and I had previously own a pair of video speakers and another Bose speaker that my original iPod plugged into.
I recently bought the Bose - Companion 5 Multimedia Speaker System and although they are somewhat expensive, it was absolutely worth every penny. The first thing I tried was playing the Interstellar soundtrack by Hans Zimmer from iTunes and it sounded absolutely incredible even at very high volume. My music sounds "crisp". The "touch" mute is a little sensitive. If I'm moving the control pod, sometimes I accidentally mute it. It was very easy to setup. Just plug in the USB cable to your computer and the drivers are automatically installed. My system is running Microsoft Windows 8.1. The control pod has a jack for headphones for private listening. It also has a 3.5mm input jack for other sound sources. I highly recommend these speakers. You just can't go wrong with these.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Can these speakers be connected to a vinyl player?

The control pod has a 3.5 mm input jack. So if you have a way to connect your vinyl player to a 3.5 mm cable, then it should work.

If I connect Companion 5 to the USB port, can I at the same time use a microphone for voice commands by connecting it to the PC's frontpanel socket?

I would very much appreciate if any one can clarify if I can use a microphone for voice recognition (in games) simultaneously when using Bose Companion 5 connected to USB port, by connecting it to the microphone socket on the computer front panel which in turn is connected to the built in audio on the motherboard(without a sound card) . I would be using Windows 7. Thanks.
You can independently set the playback (speakers) and record (microphone) in Windows 7 and in Windows 8.x. I'm running Windows 8.1 and this is the way my system is setup. Sometime I also use my Bluetooth headset microphone while still using the Bose speakers for output.
