Is there an external hard drive compatible with a mid 2007 Mac with OS 10.5.8?
I am having issues with using an outdated OS plus my disk space is almost full. I need to back up via time machine using an external drive so I can install snow leopard, to upgrade to an even better OS and so on. The problem is I can't seem to find an external drive that is compatible with my OS 10.5.8. Any suggestions?
My experience is with Snow Leopard on a Intel i7-860 Hackintosh. I believe almost any USB 2.0 or fire wire external hard drive might work. Buying one pre-formatted for Mac is the easiest way. Otherwise you will have to format it for Mac use first, eg: Mac OS Extended format. If your having trouble formatting the external drive, you might need to have a friend with a Mac format it for you first. I Always Recommend that you have your equipment, Mac and External Hard Drive, plugged into a UPS Backup Power Supply to protect the process from power issues. If you can, clone your current drive. Then test it to see if it Your Mac boots up with the external HD. Only then use Snow Leopard to reformat your internal drive for a fresh & clean install of Snow Leopard on your Mac.
