What's great about it: good price
It was the cheapest wireless adapter and works great, havent had any problems even got my Dad to buy it for his old computer which is running on windows xp. Mine runs on Windows 7.
This product has... Fast connection, Reliable connection

I don't understand the purpose of this device. Don't I still have to have a wireless router, or does this device serve the same purpose?

You need a wireless router. This device is to be used if you want to have a stronger connection. Use it on a laptop or another computer that is not hooked up to your router directly and it will increase your signal strenght substantially
