I purchased this product for my parents because it has a remote. The Chromecast is nice but because of the requirement to use your cell phone as the remote it was a little to technical for my parents. The Roku is great product if you don't mind yet another remote.

A great way to make your dumb TV smart. You use your phone as the remote to start the casting process. After the TV is displaying the content you can actually turn off your cell phone as the Chromecast takes over the streaming. The phone is only used to interface with the Chromecast. Since this product can also display content from a Chrome browser tab it is very useful business presentations on a TV as well.
I would recommend this to a friend!

Is it possible to load Linux on this machine?

Can the Bios or UEFI be set to boot from an Ubuntu 15.04 DVD?
Any hints on how this can be done?

Will it work with a SmartBoard?

I am a teacher and would like to use it to project my iPad to my Smart Board. Is this possible?
If your smartboard has an HDMI input on the projector then yes.

do I need a google account

You do not need a google account. However, if you want to display content from a web browser you must use Google Chrome.
